Romance, Op. 37 (Saint-Saëns)
The ''Romance'' in D major, Op. 37, is a composition by Camille Saint-Saëns for flute, accompanied by piano or orchestra, written in March 1871. History The piece was composed shortly after the Franco-Prussian War. After the Armistice of Versailles was signed on 28 January 1871, the Paris Commune assumed power in Paris on 18 March. Fearing for his safety, Saint-Saëns fled to exile in London. Under these extreme conditions, he wrote the ''Romance'', an enchanting piece that seems to be musically undisturbed by the circumstances of composition. The piece was dedicated to , a then well-known flautist. Because of political upheaval in France, the work was premiered by de Vroye and Saint-Saëns in mid-1871 in Baden-Baden, Germany. The Paris premiere was given by Paul Taffanel and Saint-Saëns at a Société nationale de musique concert at the Salle Pleyel on 6 April 1872. William Bennett (flautist)
William Ingham Brooke Bennett (7 February 1936 – 11 May 2022) was a British flautist and teacher. He played in many English orchestras and chamber music ensembles, and as a soloist. He made more than 100 recordings, including chamber music with partners including George Malcolm, Osian Ellis, and Yehudi Menuhin. He premiered flute concertos written for him, by William Mathias, Diana Burrell and Raimundo Pineda. Bennett taught at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Germany and the Royal Academy of Music, and held master classes worldwide. Steuart Bedford
Steuart John Rudolf Bedford (31 July 1939 – 15 February 2021) was an English orchestral and opera conductor and pianist. He was the brother of composer David Bedford and of singer Peter Lehmann Bedford and a grandson of Liza Lehmann and Herbert Bedford; his parents were Leslie Bedford, an inventor, and Lesley Duff, a soprano opera singer. Bedford was particularly associated with the music of Benjamin Britten, and conducted the world premiere of ''Death in Venice'' in 1973. Bedford also conducted Britten's other operas, and made an orchestral suite of music from ''Death in Venice''. Between 1974 and 1998, he was one of the Artistic Directors of the Aldeburgh Festival. The English Chamber Orchestra (ECO) is a British chamber orchestra based in London. The full orchestra regularly plays concerts at Cadogan Hall, and their ensemble performs at Wigmore Hall.
