The diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Morelia. The diocese was erected on 26 July 1913. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toluca ( la, Archidioecesis Tolucensis) (erected 4 June 1950 as a diocese and 28 September 2019 as an archdiocese) is a metropolitan archdiocese of the Catholic Church. Along with the Dioceses of Acapulco, Chilapa and Tacámbaro, it lost territory when the Diocese of Ciudad Altamirano was erected in 1964. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Chilpancingo–Chilapa ( la, Dioecesis Chilpancingensis–Chilapensis) is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Acapulco. History The former Diocese of Chilapa in southern Mexico comprised the State of Guerrero. It was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mexico, and existed under that name from 1863 to 1989. The early bishops were Ambrosia Serrano, Ramon Ibarra, and Homobono Anaya. Father John Ssenyondo, a priest in Chilapa, also served under the dictatorship of Idi Amin in his native Uganda. José Luis Castro Medellín
José Luis Castro Medellín M.S.F. (21 June 1938 – 24 January 2020) was a Mexican bishop of the Catholic Church who was bishop of Tacámbaro from 2002 to 2014. Biography Castro Medellín was born in Mineral de La Noria, Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Mexico, in the Archdiocese of Durango, on 21 June 1938, the third of five children. After studying at the College of St. John Baptist de la Salle, he studied for the priesthood at the seminary of the in Uruapan. In 1971 after two years of study he earned a licentiate in moral theology at the Alphonsian Academy in Rome. He took his final vows as a member of the Missionaries on 10 January 1960 and was ordained a priest as a member of the Missionaries on 16 June 1963 in Uruapan by Bishop José Gabriel Anaya y Diez de Bonilla. From 1961 to 1963 he was general treasurer of the Missionaries, from 1964 to 1967 he taught its novices, and from 1973 to 1985 he was superior general. Rogelio Cabrera López (born 24 January 1951) is a Mexican prelate of the Catholic Church who has been the archbishop of Monterrey since 2012. He has been a bishop since 1996.
