In March 1152, the diocese of Roscrea was one of the twenty-four dioceses established at the Synod of Kells. There are only two known diocesan bishops of Roscrea: Ísác O Cuanáin who died in 1161 and Ua Cerbaill who died in 1168. By the end of the 12th century, Roscrea had been incorporated into the bishopric of Killaloe. In 1970, the Roman Catholic Church revived the title as the Titular Bishop of Ros Cré. Roscrea () is a market town in County Tipperary, Ireland, which in 2016 had a population of 5,446. Roscrea is one of the oldest towns in Ireland, having developed around the 7th century monastery of Saint Crónán of Roscrea, parts of which remain preserved today. Roscrea is a designated ''Irish Heritage Town'' due to the extent of important historical buildings that are preserved in the town. Amongst the most notable buildings of interest are the 13th century Roscrea Castle and Damer House on Castle Street. Within the town are the remains of the ancient Romanesque doorway and gable-end of St Cronan's church. The Round Tower and the High cross of the ancient monastery are also located nearby. Patrick Joseph Walsh (born 9 April 1931) is an Irish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. From 1991 until 2008 he was the 31st Bishop of Down & Connor. Early life and education Walsh was born in 1931 at Cobh, Irish Free State. When he was 11 years old, his RIC father moved the family to Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he attended St Marys CBGS Belfast and won university scholarships in both science and literature. He entered St. Malachy's College as a seminarian, attending Queen's University Belfast. During Philosophy studies at Queen's he was taught by the future archbishop of Armagh, Dr Cahal Daly. He then studied theology at the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome, completed a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and was ordained priest on 25 February 1956. The Diocese of Killaloe ( ; ga, Deoise Chill Dalua) is a Roman Catholic diocese in mid-western Ireland, one of six suffragan dioceses in the ecclesiastical province of Cashel and Emly. The cathedral church of the diocese is the Cathedral of Ss Peter and Paul in Ennis, County Clare. The incumbent bishop of the diocese is Fintan Monahan. Geography The diocese is divided into 58 parishes, which are spread across five counties: 38 in Clare, thirteen in Tipperary, five in Offaly, one in Limerick, and one group parish in Laois. The parishes are grouped into 15 Pastoral Areas, where groups of priests are appointed to cover a number of parishes between them. He was an auxiliary bishop in Cologne from 2006 to 2013 and Bishop of Dresden-Meissen from 2013 to 2015. Early life and career Koch was born on 13 June 1954 in Düsseldorf, West Germany.
