Roman Catholic Diocese Of Kengtung
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kengtung (Lat: ''Diocesis Kengtunghensis'') is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in Burma. Erected in 1927 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Kengtung, the prefecture was created from territory in the Apostolic Vicariate of Eastern Burma. In 1950, the Prefecture was elevated to an apostolic vicariate. In 1955, the vicariate was elevated to a full diocese and became suffragan to the Archdiocese of Taunggyi. With the increases in the Catholic population, in 1975 the apostolic prefecture of Lashio was split off from the diocese of Kengtung, eventually expanding to the Diocese of Lashio. Roman Catholic Archdiocese Of Taunggyi
The Archdiocese of Taunggyi ( la, Archidioecesis Taunggyiensis) is a particular church of the Roman Catholic Church located in the Shan State of Myanmar. The dioceses of Kengtung, Loikaw, Pekhon and Taungngu are suffragans of the archdiocese. The cathedral of the archdiocese is St. Joseph's Cathedral in Taunggyi. The diocese of Taunggyi was created on March 21, 1961 by splitting from the diocese of Taungoo, and was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Yangon. When the diocese was elevated to become an archdiocese and metropolitan see on January 17, 1998, Kentung (from Mandalay) and Loikaw and Taungoo (from Yangon) were assigned to the new ecclesiastical province. The Diocese of Pekhon was created on December 15, 2005 by splitting off the southern part of the archdiocese. The Roman Rite ( la, Ritus Romanus) is the primary liturgical rite of the Latin Church, the largest of the ''sui iuris'' particular churches that comprise the Catholic Church. It developed in the Latin language in the city of Rome and, while distinct Latin liturgical rites such as the Ambrosian Rite remain, the Roman Rite has gradually been adopted almost everywhere in the Latin Church. Latin liturgical rites, or Western liturgical rites, are Catholic rites of public worship employed by the Latin Church, the largest particular church ''sui iuris'' of the Catholic Church, that originated in Europe where the Latin language once dominated. The diocese of Lashio is a Roman Catholic diocese of Myanmar centered at Lashio. The diocesan territory covers a land area of 61,266 square kilometers. Philip Lasap Za Hawng (born 1945) is the current bishop of Lashio (from 1998). History The mission territory of the Northern Shan State was first evangelized around 1869 by MEP Fathers, then directing the Apostolic vicariate of Northern Burma. At a later phase in 1930, the PIME Italian Fathers took over and much expansion was made both east and west of the Salween River.
