Alessandria Cathedral
Alessandria Cathedral ( it, Duomo d'Alessandria, Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Marco) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Alessandria, Piedmont, Italy, dedicated to Saint Peter, Saints Peter and Saint Mark, Mark. It is the seat of the Bishop of Alessandria. History A diocese centred on Alessandria was created in 1175 by Pope Alexander III, and a cathedral dedicated to Saint Peter was built as the bishop's seat at that time. It was too small however, so was demolished and rebuilt between 1288 and 1297. This cathedral was demolished for military tactical reasons on the order of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. The dispossessed bishop and chapter received the permission of the French general of the occupying troops to elevate the church of St Mark to the status of cathedral. This church had been built in the 13th century for the use of the Dominican Order, Dominicans. The French troops had commandeered it in 1797 for quarters. Giovanni Antonio Sangiorgio (died 14 March 1509) was an Italian canon lawyer and Cardinal (Catholicism), Cardinal. Augustino Oldoini, Agostino Oldoino calls him the leading jurisconsult of his age. Kenneth Pennington has called him one of the ‘last two great commentators on feudal law’. Sangiorgio was born in Milan. He had taught Canon Law at the University of Pavia. He was Provost of the Collegiate Church of S. Ambrogio in Milan. In Rome he became a Papal Referendary, and an Auditor (judge) of the Sacred Roman Rota (Court of Appeal). He was bishop of Alessandria from 1478 to 1500, having been appointed by Pope Sixtus IV at the special request of the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Sforza. Pope Martin V ( la, Martinus V; it, Martino V; January/February 1369 – 20 February 1431), born Otto (or Oddone) Colonna, was the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 11 November 1417 to his death in February 1431.
