History The Diocese of Bathurst was erected by Pope Pius IX on 20 June 1865. Prior to this date, the area was considered within the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Sydney, its present Metropolitan. Patrick Dougherty (21 November 1931 in Kensington, New South Wales – 30 August 2010 in Bathurst, New South Wales), an Australian suffragan bishop, was the seventh bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bathurst, serving for 25 years from 1983 until his retirement in 2008. Early years and background The second of four sons (three of whom became priests) born to William and Madge Dougherty, Dougherty was educated at Our Lady of the Rosary school, Kensington and Waverley College, before completing his secondary education at St Columba's College in Springwood in 1948. John Francis Norton (1891-1963) was an Irish born Catholic missionary priest who served as Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bathurst in Australia. John Norton was born in Lucan, Co. Dublin, 1891, and educated at the Christian Brothers, James Street, Dublin, before going to the Jesuit Mungret College Limerick, from 1905 until 1909.
