The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Assumption ( es, Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), better known as Valladolid Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church in Valladolid, Spain. The main layout was designed by Juan de Herrera in a Renaissance-style. The original design for this cathedral would have created a church which would have been the largest cathedral in Europe. Metropolitan Bishop
In Christian churches with episcopal polity, the rank of metropolitan bishop, or simply metropolitan (alternative obsolete form: metropolite), pertains to the diocesan bishop or archbishop of a metropolis. Originally, the term referred to the bishop of the chief city of a historical Roman province, whose authority in relation to the other bishops of the province was recognized by the First Council of Nicaea (AD 325). The bishop of the provincial capital, the metropolitan, enjoyed certain rights over other bishops in the province, later called " suffragan bishops". Juan Bautista de Acevedo y Muñoz (1555 – 8 June 1608) was Bishop of Valladolid from 1601 to 1606 and Grand Inquisitor of Spain from 1603 to 1608. Biography Juan Bautista de Acevedo y Muñoz was born in Hoz de Anero, Trasmiera in 1555, the son of Juan González de Acevedo and of Sancha González Muñoz. Born into a distinguished but not rich family, he was the eldest of eleven children, only three of which reached adulthood. His brother Francisco became ''merino'' of Trasmiera; and his brother Fernando was Bishop of Osma 1610-13 and Archbishop of Burgos 1613-29. Juan was educated at the Jesuit grammar school in León, Spain and then at the University of Salamanca, where he studied canon law and law.
