Roller Derby In The United Kingdom
By September 2011, there were more than 1,000 amateur roller derby leagues, covering every inhabited continent, with teams in countries such as Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Sweden and Singapore In the UK, the sport is mostly played by women. Contemporary roller derby has a basic set of rules, with variations reflecting the interests of a #Associations and governing bodies, governing body's member leagues. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), which is used by the majority of leagues around the world. For example, members of the United Kingdom Roller Derby Association are required to play by WFTDA rules, while members of the Canadian Women's Roller Derby Association are encouraged to join the WFTDA. The United Kingdom Roller Derby Association (UKRDA) is the National Association for roller derby in the UK. The association was formed in 2010 with 15 member leagues, and was recognized by the British Roller Sports Federation soon after. The UKRDA has a cooperative relationship with the Women's Flat Track Derby Association The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the international governing body for the sport of women's flat track roller derby, and association of leagues around the world. The organization was founded in April 2004 as the United Leagues Co ... (WFTDA) and recognises the WFTDA rules and regulations as the universal standard, several of its members are also WFTDA members. The UKRDA is a member-led organisation that exists to promote and lobby for roller derby in the UK, however, unlike the WFTDA, it will admit men's and mixed leagues.
