The Rolladen-Schneider LSD Ornith is the first two-seater sailplane to have been built from plastic composites. The single exemplar was designed by Wolf Lemke and Karl Pummer and first flew in May 1972, a few weeks before the Akaflieg Braunschweig SB-10 Schirokko. Rolladen-Schneider
Rolladen-Schneider was a major glider manufacturer. It originally made rolling doors and shutters and was run by Willi and Walter Schneider based in Egelsbach near Frankfurt, Germany. Walter was a keen glider pilot and recruited a sailplane designer Wolf Lemke. The company built its first glider in 1967. Akaflieg Braunschweig SB-10 Schirokko
__NOTOC__ The Akaflieg Braunschweig SB-10 Schirokko is a German two-seat high performance sailplane designed and built by students of Brunswick University. The sailplane was not intended for production. Design The SB-10 is a cantilever shoulder-wing monoplane with a steel-tube structure fuselage and it used the wings from the earlier SB-9 Stratus. The two crew sit in tandem in an enclosed cockpit with a Plexiglas canopy, and it is fitted with dual instrumentation. The landing gear is a sprung retractable monowheel with a tail bumper. The wingtips are interchangeable and two types can be fitted to give a 26m or 29m span. The wing center section, its main spar and wing shells of 8m length were built using carbon fiber, a first in civil aircraft structure manufacturing. The Rolladen-Schneider LS1 is a Standard Class single-seat glider manufactured in Germany by Rolladen-Schneider from 1968 to 1977. Development The LS-1 Standard Class design was the first aircraft type arising from the partnership between Wolf Lemke and Walter Schneider, who had already worked together as students on the ground breaking Akaflieg Darmstadt D-36. Here, and in subsequent Lemke-Schneider (LS) designs, Wolf Lemke concentrated on the aerodynamics while Walter Schneider contributed mostly to the structural and production issues. The LS1 made its debut at the 1968 German National Championships, taking first and second place with the designers themselves at the controls. The success of this design increased in the subsequent years until, in 1975, it was the most flown glider in the German Nationals. The Deutsches Segelflugmuseum mit Modellflug ( en, German Glider Museum with Model Aircraft), situated on the Wasserkuppe in the German state of Hesse is the national gliding museum, opened in 1987. Wasserkuppe
The is a mountain within the German state of Hesse. It is a large plateau formation at an elevation of and is the highest peak in the Rhön Mountains. Great advances in sailplane development took place on the mountain during the interwar period, driven by annual contests. Near the summit there is still an airfield used by gliding clubs and pilots of light aircraft. Etymology The German name is derived from ''Wasenkuppe, Asenberg'' or ''Weideberg'' and means ''Pasture mountain''.
