Roland Cooper State Park
Roland Cooper State Park is a state-owned, contractor-operated public recreation area located six miles north of Camden, Alabama, on the eastern shore of Dannelly Reservoir, a impoundment of the Alabama River known locally as the Millers Ferry Reservoir. The park features cottages, campground, fishing, and boating facilities. History The state park opened as Bridgeport State Park on land leased from the Army Corps of Engineers following the construction of Miller's Ferry Lock and Dam in 1969. The park was renamed for state senator William Roland Cooper in the 1970s. It was one of several Alabama state parks that were closed or saw curtailment of services in 2015 following state budget cuts. The park re-opened in September 2016 under a management agreement with a private contracting company. Wilcox County is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,600. Its county seat is Camden. History Wilcox County was established on December 13, 1819. The county was named after Joseph M. Wilcox, a US Army lieutenant who was killed in Alabama during the Creek War. Camden, Alabama
Camden is a city in and the county seat of Wilcox County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,020 at the 2010 census, down from 2,257 in 2000, at which time it was a town. History What is now Camden was established on property donated by Thomas Dunn from his plantation holdings in order to have a new town founded on the site in 1833 to serve as the county seat. Dunn's Federal style house, built in 1825, is the oldest documented house in the town. The first county seat was in the community of Canton Bend. The county seat was moved in 1833 to Barboursville, later renamed Camden. It had been named Barboursville in honor of United States Congressman Philip P. Barbour of Virginia. Incorporated in 1841, Camden was renamed by local physician John D. Caldwell in honor of his hometown of Camden, South Carolina. William "Bill" Dannelly Reservoir
The William "Bill" Dannelly Reservoir is a reservoir created by Millers Ferry Lock and Dam on the Alabama River in Dallas County and Wilcox County in Alabama. It covers and has approximately of shoreline. It was named for William "Bill" Dannelly, a former Wilcox County probate judge credited with leading the modernization of the Alabama and Coosa Rivers. The Dannelly Reservoir is notable as a regional fishing ground and recreational area. Fish species present include white crappie, striped bass, hybrid striped bass, blue catfish, and channel catfish. Several parks border the lake. Those with developed camping include Roland Cooper State Park, Chilatchee Creek Campground, and Millers Ferry Campground. Primitive camping only is available at Six Mile Creek Park, Elm Bluff Park, Portland Landing, and Bridgeport Landing.
