Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway
The Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway is a National Scenic Byway in the U.S. state of Oregon. It provides a tour of the environs of the North Umpqua River, the High Cascades, and the Upper Rogue River. Route description Starting from Roseburg on OR 138, at the junction with Interstate 5, the scenic byway travels eastward. Near Glide, it begins to parallel the North Umpqua River. It continues roughly eastward until it meets Diamond Lake, where it turns southward along the east shore of the lake. Near the southern tip of the lake the scenic byway turns west and then southwest on OR 230. Here it follows the Rogue River, eventually merges with OR 62 near Union Creek. On its last leg the route meets up with OR 234 and passes near Upper and Lower Table Rock. The byway's terminus is at Gold Hill. The entire scenic byway is long. Union Creek (Rogue River)
Union Creek is a long tributary of the Rogue River in the U.S. state of Oregon. Beginning west of Union Peak in the Cascade Range, it flows through the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest to meet the Rogue at Union Creek and the Union Creek Historic District. The creek begins near Rocktop Butte and flows north through Jackson County, roughly parallel to the nearby border of Crater Lake National Park and the Jackson–Klamath county line, which is on the right. At about river mile 10 or river kilometer (RK) 16, the creek curves to the west. The relevant map quadrangles are Union Creek, Thousand Springs, and Red Blanket Mountain, Oregon. Cascade Range
The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades. The small part of the range in British Columbia is referred to as the Canadian Cascades or, locally, as the Cascade Mountains. A National Scenic Byway is a road recognized by the United States Department of Transportation for one or more of six "intrinsic qualities": archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and scenic. The program was established by Congress in 1991 to preserve and protect the nation's scenic but often less-traveled roads and promote tourism and economic development. The National Scenic Byways Program (NSBP) is administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The most scenic byways are designated All-American Roads, which must meet two out of the six intrinsic qualities. The designation means they have features that do not exist elsewhere in the United States and are unique and important enough to be tourist destinations unto themselves. Oregon Route 227 was an Oregon state highway which originally ran from the city of Canyonville, Oregon to the community of Trail. In 1985, the highway was truncated at the Douglas–Jackson county line; only the southern section remained under state control. It was known as the Tiller–Trail Highway No. 230 (see Oregon highways and routes). Route description OR 227 previously began, at its western terminus, at an interchange with Interstate 5 and Oregon Route 99 in Canyonville. It headed east from there, into the foothills of the southern Oregon Cascades, along the South Fork of the Umpqua River. East of the town of Tiller, it diverges from the river, and heads south. The final form of the highway began at the county line and continued southward and ended at an intersection with Oregon Route 62 in Trail.
