Roger Arliner Young
Roger Arliner Young (1899 – November 9, 1964) was an American scientist of zoology, biology, and marine biology. She was the first African American woman to receive a doctorate, doctorate degree in zoology. Early years Born in Clifton Forge, Virginia in 1899, Young soon moved with her family to Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. The family was poor and most of the time resources were expended in the care of her disabled mother. In 1916, Young enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C. to study music. She wrote in the yearbook: "Not failure, but low aim is a crime." She did not take her first science course until 1921. Though her grades were poor at the beginning of her college career, some of her teachers saw promise in her. One such teacher was Ernest Everett Just, a prominent black biologist and head of the Zoology department at Howard University. Young graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1923. Rodger Young
Rodger Wilton Young (April 28, 1918July 31, 1943) was a United States Army infantryman from Ohio during World War II. Born in the small town of Tiffin, Ohio, in 1918, Young suffered a sports injury in high school that led to his becoming nearly deaf and blind. Despite this, Young was able to pass the exams necessary to enter the Ohio National Guard. Soon after the United States entered World War II, Young's company was activated as part of the U.S. Army. Soon after his activation, in 1943, Young was killed on the island of New Georgia while helping his platoon withdraw from a Japanese ambush. For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the United States' highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. In the years after Young's death, his legacy was commemorated in many works. Roger E. Young (born May 13, 1942 in Champaign, Illinois) is an American TV and film director. Career Young graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Illinois. He worked as a producer-director at Channel 6, the NBC affiliate in Indianapolis, Indiana. He then moved to Chicago and became a producer for Foote-Cone & Belding Advertising, where he produced national commercials. Later he moved to directing commercials for the production company of Lippert-Saviano, and then for Topel & Associates, before opening his own production company, Young & Company, producing and directing commercials. In 1977 he moved to Los Angeles and was hired as associate producer on a television film entitled ''Something for Joey''. This led to being offered associate producer of ''Lou Grant''. Roger Jay Young (born May 21, 1953) is a retired American cyclist. He was part of the United States team that won a gold medal in the 4000 m pursuit at the 1975 Pan American Games. He competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in the sprint, but failed to reach the final. In 1973 he won the national title in track sprint. Rodger Young Village was a public housing project, established to provide temporary housing for veterans returning to the Southern California area following the end of World War II. The village was named for Rodger Wilton Young, an American infantryman in the U.S. Army during World War II.
