Roger St John
Major-General Roger Ellis Tudor St John, CB, MC (4 October 1911 – 15 October 1998) was a British Army officer. Military career Educated at Wellington College, Berkshire and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, St. John was commissioned into the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers on 27 August 1931. He served in the Second World War as brigade major for the 11th Armoured Division and, after the war, went on to become commanding officer of the 1st Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers was an infantry regiment of the British Army. 11th Armoured Division (United Kingdom)
The 11th Armoured Division was an armoured division of the British Army which was created in March 1941 during the Second World War. The division was formed in response to the unanticipated success of the German panzer divisions. The 11th Armoured was responsible for several major victories in the Battle of Normandy from in the summer of 1944, shortly after the Normandy landings, and it participated in the Allied advance from Paris to the Rhine, the Rhine crossing in March 1945. It was disbanded in January 1946 and reformed towards the end of 1950. In 1956, it was converted into the 4th Infantry Division. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". The Royal Military College (RMC), founded in 1801 and established in 1802 at Great Marlow and High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, England, but moved in October 1812 to Sandhurst, Berkshire, was a British Army military academy for training infantry and cavalry officers of the British and Indian Armies. The RMC was reorganised at the outbreak of the Second World War, but some of its units remained operational at Sandhurst and Aldershot. In 1947, the Royal Military College was merged with the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, to form the present-day all-purpose Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
