Roger Iglesias
Roger J. Iglesias Suárez (born September 12, 1958, in Canóvanas, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican politician. He was a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1992 to 2000 and 2011 to 2013. In 2011, he was elected to fill the vacant seat left by the resignation of Héctor Martínez. Early years and studies Roger Iglesias was born on September 12, 1958, in the town of Canóvanas, Puerto Rico. His parents were Roberto Iglesias, former Mayor of Carolina, and Rosaura Rodríguez. Iglesias obtained his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Political career First years in politics: 1984–1991 From 1984 to 1988, Iglesias served as Special Aide to then-Mayor of San Juan Baltasar Corrada del Río. Puerto Rico Senatorial District VIII, also known as the Senatorial District of Carolina, is one of the eight senatorial districts of Puerto Rico. It is currently represented by Henry Neumann and Nitza Morán (both from the New Progressive Party). District profile The Senatorial District VIII has an approximate population of 465,427. ''El Vocero de Puerto Rico'' is a Puerto Rican free newspaper that is published in San Juan. Published since 1974, ''El Vocero'' was at first the third of the four largest Puerto Rico newspapers, trailing '' El Mundo'' and ''El Nuevo Día'' and leading '' El Reportero'' and ''The San Juan Star'' in sales. ''El Nuevo Día'' (English: ''The New Day'') is the newspaper with the largest circulation in Puerto Rico. It was founded in 1909 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and today it is a subsidiary of GFR Media. The 2008 New Progressive Party primaries were the primary elections by which voters of the New Progressive Party (PNP) chose its nominees for various political offices of Puerto Rico, namely the position of governor, for the 2008 general elections. Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuño was selected as the nominee at the primary elections held on March 9, 2008. He would go on to win the 2008 general election as well. Background Pedro Rosselló had come from a defeat against Aníbal Acevedo Vilá at the 2004 elections. Despite that, he managed to gain a seat in the Senate. After an unsuccessful power struggle within the Senate to gain the presidency of the body, it was speculated that Rosselló would make another attempt at being elected Governor for the 2008 elections.
