Rogan is an Irish surname, deriving from the Irish ''Ó Ruadhagáin'', which can be loosely translated to mean "red-haired." History The clan is descended from one of the septs of Oriel which originated in Counties Armagh and Monaghan and parts of South Down, Louth and Fermanagh. Recordings from Irish Church Registers include: the christening of Mary, daughter of Henry and Margaret Rogan, at Downpatrick, County Down on January 23, 1799, and the christening of Ann Jane, daughter of Dan and Anne Rogan, at Aghalee, County Antrim, on December 25, 1813. Anne Rogan, aged 17 yrs., was a famine emigrant to America, leaving Liverpool for New York in March 1846. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Elizabeth Rogan, which was dated 1743, christened at Inch by Gorey, County Wexford. Wilber Joe Rogan, also known as "Bullet Joe" (July 28, 1893 – March 4, 1967), was an American pitcher, outfielder, and manager for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro baseball leagues from 1920 to 1938. Renowned as a two-way player who could both hit and pitch successfully, one statistical compilation shows Rogan winning more games than any other pitcher in Negro leagues history and ranking fourth highest in career batting average. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. Rogan's early baseball career took place in the U.S. Army, where he played for a famous team in the all-black 25th Infantry. After joining the Kansas City Monarchs, he was the top pitcher and one of the best hitters on a team that won three pennants from 1923 to 1925 and the 1924 Colored World Series. John Rogan (14 February 1953 – 21 January 2021) was a British author of Irish descent best known for his books about music and popular culture. He wrote influential biographies of the Byrds, Neil Young, the Smiths, Van Morrison and Ray Davies. His writing was characterised by "an almost neurotic attention to detail", epic length (the first volume of ''Requiem for the Timeless'' is more than 1,200 pages long) and an ambivalent, sometimes positive and sometimes hostile response, from the subjects of his biographies.
