Rodney District Council
Rodney District was a local government area in the northernmost part of New Zealand's Auckland Region from 1989 to 2010. It included Kawau Island. It was created from the amalgamation of Helensville Borough and Rodney County in 1989. The seat of Rodney District Council was at Orewa. Rodney District and Rodney County each took their names from Cape Rodney (opposite Little Barrier Island), which Captain James Cook named on 24 November 1769 after Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney. Auckland Council has governed the area since 1 November 2010. The Rodney ward of the Auckland Region now covers much of the land area, but not the Hibiscus Coast or the former council seat of Orewa, which are in the Albany ward. The district was, in the final electoral term (2007–2010) of its existence, led by mayor Penny Webster and 12 councillors. John Law (New Zealand Politician)
John Law is a politician and former mayor of the Rodney District Council, New Zealand. He was one of the five mayors heading the main local government entities generally considered as making up the Auckland metropolitan area ( Auckland City, Manukau City, Waitakere City, North Shore City, Rodney District), with his district being the smallest and northernmost entity. John Law did not stand for re-election in 2007. He was also one of the proponents of greater regional integration between the various cities. One of the plans that he mooted together with the other affected mayors called for an Auckland Super-City with unified city government and a unified council rates system, as well as an abolition of the Auckland Regional Council (ARC). However, the plan was widely criticised for not promising increased financial efficiency and later discarded. Doug Armstrong (broadcaster)
Douglas Warwick Armstrong (13 April 1931 – 18 February 2015) was a New Zealand cricketer, television sports broadcaster and local-body politician. He served as mayor of Rodney District from 1992 to 2000. Cricket career Born in Wellington in 1931, Armstrong was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and tail-end batsman. He played two first-class matches for Central Districts in the 1958–59 season, and also appeared for Manawatu and Wanganui in four Hawke Cup matches between 1956 and 1964. Broadcasting career Armstrong was a sports presenter on TVNZ in the 1980s. Political career Armstrong was elected mayor of Rodney District in 1992, succeeding Sir Gordon Mason. He was re-elected at the local-body elections in 1995 and 1998, but council in-fighting led to his resignation in 2000. Gordon Mason
Sir Gordon Charles Mason (8 November 1921 – 20 July 2010) was a New Zealand local-body politician and businessman. He served as the mayor of Rodney District from 1989 to 1992. Biography Born in Helensville on 8 November 1921, Mason was the son of Joseph Henry Mason and May Louisa Mason (née Parker). In 1944, he married Tui Audrey King, and the couple had three children. They lived at Kaipara Flats, where they ran a transport business and later farmed. Mason entered local-body politics in 1960, when he was elected a member of the Rodney County Council. He served as deputy chair of the county council for 10 years from 1963, and then was chair between 1973 and 1989. When Rodney District was created by the amalgamation of Helensville Borough and Rodney County in the 1989 local government reforms, Mason was elected the district's first mayor, before retiring from public life three years later. Penny Webster
Penny Webster is a former mayor of Rodney District and a councillor on the Auckland Council. As mayor of Rodney she headed one of the six main local government entities generally considered as making up the Auckland metropolitan area (Auckland City, Manukau City, Waitakere City, North Shore City, Papakura District, Rodney District), with her district being the northernmost entity. All of these entities were merged into the new Auckland Council in 2010. She was also a former New Zealand politician: an MP from 1999 to 2002, representing the ACT New Zealand party. Before entering politics, Webster was a farmer, and headed the Auckland branch of the Federated Farmers organisation. Albany Ward (local Government)
Albany Ward is an Auckland Council ward which elects two councillors and covers the Hibiscus and Bays and Upper Harbour Local Boards. The two councillors are currently John Watson and Wayne Walker. Demographics Albany ward covers and had an estimated population of as of with a population density of people per km2. Albany ward had a population of 166,854 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 23,355 people (16.3%) since the 2013 census, and an increase of 42,123 people (33.8%) since the 2006 census. There were 56,415 households, comprising 81,522 males and 85,332 females, giving a sex ratio of 0.96 males per female. Hibiscus Coast
The Hibiscus Coast is a populated area on a stretch of the Hauraki Gulf coast in New Zealand's Auckland Region. It has a population of making it the 11th most populous urban area in New Zealand, and the second most populous in the Auckland Region, behind Auckland itself. As an urban area delineated by Statistics New Zealand, the Hibiscus Coast consists of Hatfields Beach, Orewa, Silverdale and Whangaparaoa Peninsula. It includes several small suburban residential and commercial areas such as Stanmore Bay, Arkles Bay, Army Bay, Manly, Red Beach, Gulf Harbour, Tindalls Beach and Matakatia. Auckland Council
Auckland Council ( mi, Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau) is the local government council for the Auckland Region in New Zealand. It is a territorial authority that has the responsibilities, duties and powers of a regional council and so is a unitary authority, according to the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, which established the council. The governing body consists of a mayor and 20 councillors, elected from 13 wards. There are also 149 members of 21 local boards who make decisions on matters local to their communities. It is the largest council in Oceania, with a $3 billion annual budget, $29 billion of ratepayer equity, and 9,870 full-time staff as of 30 June 2016.
