Rod Sweetman
Rodney Noel Sweetman (born 21 June 1953) is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 2005. Sweetman was born in the Perth suburb of Subiaco. He was first elected to state parliament at the 1996 state election winning the seat of Ningaloo and was subsequently re-elected to the same seat at the 2001 state election. Ningaloo was abolished ahead of the 2005 state election with its territory split between Murchison-Eyre and the new seat of North West Coastal. Sweetman chose to contest neither seat, instead unsuccessfully seeking Liberal preselection in more winnable districts elsewhere. He then sought endorsement from the Family First Party but was rejected due to his vote in support of decriminalising abortion. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. 2008 Western Australian State Election
The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 6 September 2008 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, in power since the 2001 election and led since 25 January 2006 by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Colin Barnett since 6 August 2008. The election resulted in a hung parliament with no party gaining a majority. Labor was two seats short of a majority in the expanded legislature. Ultimately, the Liberals were able to form a coalition government with the WA Nationals, supported by three independents. While both parties agreed to National demands that at least 25 percent of mining proceeds go to regional projects, the Nationals ultimately went with the Liberals. North West Central is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is mostly based in the rural north-west of Western Australia. It is currently a marginal seat for the Nationals. History First known as North West Coastal, the district was first created for the 2005 state election, incorporating territory from the abolished districts of Burrup and Ningaloo. The seat was won by Labor MP, and then member for Burrup, Fred Riebeling. The district was expanded for the 2008 state election, incorporating more inland territory which resulted in the name change to North West. The Family First Party was a Conservatism in Australia, conservative political party in Australia which existed from 2002 to 2017. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949.
