Rockport Train Wreck
The Rockport train wreck occurred in Rockport in Mansfield Township, New Jersey, United States, about three miles outside of Hackettstown, on June 16, 1925. A violent storm washed debris onto a grade crossing, derailing a Lackawanna Railroad (DL&W) train. The crash killed 42 passengers and five crewmen and injured twenty-three others. Train The train, a non-scheduled special train of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W), was carrying 182 German-Americans from Chicago, Illinois, to Hoboken, New Jersey. At Hoboken, the passengers were to board the transatlantic steamer ''Pacific'' for Europe. The trip was an annual excursion organized through steamship agent Leopold Neumann to allow midwestern Germans to visit their homeland. The trip's itinerary included visits to Bremen, Cologne, and Munich in Germany and Vienna in Austria. Mansfield Township is a township in Warren County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 7,725, reflecting an increase of 1,072 (+16.1%) from the 6,653 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 501 (−7.0%) from the 7,154 counted in the 1990 Census. What is now Mansfield Township was formed on May 30, 1754, as Mansfield-Woodhouse Township from portions of Greenwich Township, while the area was still part of Sussex County, and was incorporated as Mansfield Township on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The township became part of the newly formed Warren County on November 20, 1824. The sleeping car or sleeper (often ) is a railway passenger car (rail), passenger car that can accommodate all passengers in beds of one kind or another, for the purpose of sleeping. George Pullman was the American innovator of the sleeper car. Slateford Junction
Slateford Junction was a railway junction in the small town of Slateford, Pennsylvania. It was built to connect the existing mainline of the Lackawanna Railroad, the so-called Old Road with the new Lackawanna Cut-Off. It was in service from 1911 until 1979. The junction sat west of Port Morris Junction, where the Cut-Off connects with what is today New Jersey Transit's Morristown Line. When operations began on December 24, 1911, the junction merged four tracks (two main tracks and two sidings) from the Cut-Off with two from the Old Road. An interlocking tower at the junction opened four days before the Cut-Off itself. The junction also included a 60-foot turntable, but this saw limited use; it was dismantled in the 1930s and its pit filled in shortly thereafter. The tower closed on January 11, 1951; the switches at the junction became hand-throw with electric locks.
