Rockport Art Association is an art association in the United States. It started as an artist's cooperative and became a gathering place of New England artists of the 20th century. Aldro Hibbard
Aldro Thompson Hibbard (August 25, 1886 – November 12, 1972) was an American plein air painter known for his depictions of snowy landscapes, particularly of Vermont. Hibbard worked in oil, as watercolor couldn't be used in January and February in the mountains of Vermont. He lived most of his life in Rockport, Massachusetts. Early life Hibbard was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts to James Thompson Hibbard and to the former Katherine Swift. Hibbard's father sold sewing machines and his mother was a homemaker who had a fondness of nature and spiritualism. He had one older sister, Adeline. Hibbard was raised in the Boston suburbs of Roxbury and Dorchester and graduated from Dorchester High School in 1906. Hibbard was captain of the baseball team at Dorchester High School. As a young man, he often spent summers visiting family in Falmouth, and in 1911, 1913, 1915, and 1916, he played baseball for the "Cottage Club", Falmouth's town team in what is now the Cape Cod Baseball League. ... Paul Strisik
Paul Strisik (April 22, 1918 – July 22, 1998) was an American ''plein air'' painter. Background Paul Strisik was born in Brooklyn, New York. From 1937 to 1940 he owned and operated the Hall Fish and Line Co. in New York State before enlisting in the US Navy in 1941. He was stationed in French Morocco where he served as Chief Photographers Mate. In the 1950s he moved to Rockport, Massachusetts, and later attended the Art Students League of New York where he was taught by Frank DuMond. Strisik was an ''en plein air'' painter who worked in both oil and watercolor. While primarily a New England artist, he also painted European subjects and, between 1976 and 1992, lived and painted part-time in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Anthony Thieme
Anthony Thieme (20 February 1888 – 6 December 1954) was a landscape and marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport (MA) School of American regional art. He was a contemporary of important Rockport artists Aldro Hibbard, Emil Gruppe, W. Lester Stevens, Antonio Cirino, and Marguerite Pierson. Born in Rotterdam on 20 February 1888, Thieme studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and then, briefly, at the Royal Academy, the Hague. He traveled widely in Europe, frequently finding work as a stage designer. Thieme traveled to the United States at the age of 22. He quickly found work as a stage designer at the Century Theater in New York, designing sets for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. When the commission ended, he traveled to South America, primarily Brazil and Argentina. Stage work again provided his livelihood. Harry Aiken Vincent
Harry Aiken Vincent (1861-1931) was a largely self-taught American artist known for his En plein air, plein air landscape paintings. Many of his oil paintings portrayed marine scenes at the start or end of the day, featuring boats and fishing activity in New England, particularly on Cape Ann, and in France. The treatment of water, sky, light and color in his works was representative of the American school of Impressionism. He was also skilled at water color and drawing in charcoal. Vincent was born in Chicago and began his artistic career working for Thomas G. Moses of Sosman and Landis as a Scenic painting (theatre), scenic painter for theaters, creating elaborate backdrops. His earliest known oil paintings often depicted rural scenes of towns and farms outside of Chicago. In 1893 he exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition, World's Fair in Chicago.
