Rockingham County, North Carolina
Rockingham County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 91,096. Its county seat is Wentworth. The county is known as "North Carolina's North Star." Rockingham County is included in the Greensboro-High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area of the Piedmont Triad metro region. History Settling and founding Between 1728 and 1733, the Dan River Valley was surveyed by William Byrd II. He soon thereafter purchased 20,000 acres of the land, attracting prospective farmers. The region's first western settlers came from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia and were of German, English, Scottish, and Irish descent. Rockingham County Courthouse (North Carolina)
The Rockingham County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at Wentworth, North Carolina, Wentworth, Rockingham County, North Carolina. It was designed by Frank P. Milburn and built in 1907. It is a Neoclassical architecture, Classical Revival style red brick building that consists of a three-story hipped roofed main block flanked by later added (at two separate times) two-story flat roofed wings. It features a low and broad polygonal cupola atop the Spanish red tile roof. The 1907 courthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, now houses the Museum and Archives of Rockingham County. Haw River State Park
Haw River State Park is a North Carolina state park in Guilford and Rockingham Counties, North Carolina in the United States. As one of the newest state parks in North Carolina, Haw River has limited recreational opportunities. Haw River State Park currently houses the Summit Environmental Education Center and is located off North Carolina Highway 150 in Browns Summit. Environmental education Environmental education is the central focus at Haw River State Park. The Summit Environmental Education Center is a retreat and educational facility operated by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. It was formerly a retreat center owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, who sold the property to the state. The center can house up to 180 overnight visitors in a motel and several dormitories. Haw River
The Haw River is a tributary of the Cape Fear River, approximately 110 mi (177 km) long, that is entirely contained in north central North Carolina in the United States. It was first documented as the "Hau River" by John Lawson, an English botanist, in his 1709 book "A New Voyage to Carolina." The name is shortened from Saxapahaw, from the Catawban ''/sak'yápha:/'', "piedmont, foothill", from ''/sak/'', "hill", plus ''/yápha:/'', "step". The river gives its name to a small town that formed on its banks. Avalon, North Carolina
Avalon was a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, in the United States. It was centered around a textiles mill constructed by Francis Henry Fries at the end of the 19th century. In 1911 the mill burnt down. Most of the population moved their homes to Mayodan, North Carolina and the area was left abandoned. History Establishment In 1887, Francis Henry Fries, a prominent businessman from Winston-Salem, constructed the Roanoke and Southern Railway, which stretched from his home town to Roanoke, Virginia. Seeking to develop industry along the rail line, Fries erected the Mayo Mill adjacent to the Mayo River in 1895 and established the town of Mayodan. The Mayo Mill could not keep up with demand for yarn, so from 1899 to 1900 a new mill was built two miles to the north. W. C. Mayodan is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, in the United States. It is a manufacturing site for Sturm, Ruger & Co., Bridgestone Aircraft Tire, and General Tobacco (ceased operations 2010). Washington Mills Company, later Tultex, operated a textile mill in Mayodan until 1999. The town is named for two rivers that converge nearby, the Mayo and the Dan, and, according to ''Ripley's Believe It or Not!'', is the only town in the world with this name. Washington Mills-Mayodan Plant, also known as Mayo Mills, Washington Group-Mayodan Plant, and Tultex Corp.-Mayodan Plant, was a historic textile mill and national historic district located at Mayodan, Rockingham County, North Carolina. It encompassed four contributing buildings and two contributing structures in the town of Mayodan. The main spinning mill was built in 1895, and was a three-story, rectangular brick structure with a low-pitched gable roof. The mill was expanded several times between 1897 and 1954. It featured a four-story, one bay, tower with an open belfry at the top. Also on the property were the contributing knitting mill (1911), transformer house (c. 1900), railroad underpass, railroad spur, and frame wood shed. The mill closed in 1999. The mill buildings were demolished in 2012. Francis Henry Fries
Francis Henry Fries (February 1, 1855 – 5 June 1931) was an American textile businessman and industrialist from North Carolina. Biography Francis Henry Fries was born on February 1, 1855, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His parents were Francis Levin Fries and Lisetta Maria Vogler. Fries attended the Salem Boys' School, and later graduated from Davidson College in 1874. At 21 years old, Fries joined his father's textile firm, F & H Fries Manufacturing Company, working as a mechanic and a blacksmith. During his tenure he would work in all of the company's departments. In 1878, Fries traveled with his brother and uncle to Europe, visiting the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Upon his return he was promoted to superintendent. On November 23, 1881 he married Letitia Walker Patterson, granddaughter of Governor John Motley Morehead. She and their only child died three years later, both around the same time. Stoneville, North Carolina
Stoneville is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, United States. Stoneville is part of the Greensboro–High Point metropolitan area of the Piedmont Triad. History Settlers came to the ridge between the Mayo and Dan rivers in the northwest Piedmont region in the early 1800s. In 1827, the Deep Springs Plantation was built for James Madison Scales and his wife Elizabeth Lesuer in what is now Stoneville. In 1843 the R.H. Lewis Tobacco company was established in the south side of the land that was to become the town of Stoneville. In the late 1850s, brothers Thomas and Pinkney Stone bought land in the area. On March 5, 1877, the town was officially incorporated. A natural stop on the Norfolk-Western rail line, Stoneville became the trade hub for the surrounding localities and profited off of tobacco, cotton and grist-milling industries.
