Rocking The Forest
''Rocking the Forest'' is an EP by Sebadoh, released in 1992. It was the first release on the label Domino Records, who released it in the United Kingdom via a licensing agreement with Sebadoh's American label Sub Pop. Two songs (#1 & #2) had been previously released on the Gimme Indie Rock 7 inch EP. Three songs (#2, #3 & #5) are re-recordings of songs previously released under Lou Barlow's Sentridoh moniker. Four songs (#4, #6, #7 & #8) were later included on the compilation album Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock. The entire EP was included as bonus tracks on the German version of Sebadoh vs Helmet, released by City Slang City Slang is an independent record label based in Berlin, Germany. Sebadoh
Sebadoh () is an American indie rock band formed in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Eric Gaffney and Lou Barlow, with multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein completing the line-up in 1989. Barlow co-created Sebadoh as an outlet for his songwriting when J. Mascis gradually took over creative control of Dinosaur Jr., in which Barlow plays bass guitar. Along with such bands as Pavement, Beat Happening and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer a lo-fi style of indie rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques that employed four-track cassette tape machines. The band's early output, such as ''The Freed Man'' and ''Weed Forestin''' (both released 1990), as well as ''Sebadoh III'' (1991), was typical of this style. Sub Pop is a record label founded in 1986 by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman. City Slang is an independent record label based in Berlin, Germany. History The label was founded in 1990 by former tour agent Christof Ellinghaus, exclusively to release The Flaming Lips' '' In A Priest Driven Ambulance (With Silver Sunshine Stares)''. ''Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock'' is a compilation album by the American indie rock band Sebadoh. It was released in 1992, and marked the band's debut on Sub Pop. It includes four of the eight songs from their ''Rocking the Forest'' EP, and eight of the nine songs from their ''Sebadoh vs Helmet'' EP. Both EPs were released in Europe on Domino/20/20 Recordings in early 1992. Eric Gaffney contributed the majority of the album artwork, and the title, which was lifted for a ''SPIN'' article on Nirvana in 1994, and was taken for a book title of the same name, by Matt Bissonnette. "Vampire" was released as the compilation's single. Critical reception Rob Sheffield, in ''The New Rolling Stone Album Guide'', called "Brand New Love" one of Barlow's best songs, and an "anthemic losercore ballad." Louis Knox Barlow (born July 17, 1966) is an American alternative rock musician and songwriter. A founding member of the groups Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion, Barlow is credited with helping to pioneer the lo-fi style of rock music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His first band, which was formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, was Deep Wound. Barlow was born in Dayton, Ohio, and raised in Jackson, Michigan, and Westfield, Massachusetts. Barlow has released four solo albums, the latest of which is the May 28, 2021 release ''Reason to Live.'' Dinosaur Jr. Barlow attended high school in Westfield, Massachusetts, where he met Scott Helland. The two formed the Massachusetts-based hardcore punk band Deep Wound. Fort Apache Studios is a New England recording studio focusing on alternative rock sessions produced there since 1986. History The studio was initially built by a collective begun in 1985 by musician/producer Joe Harvard and members of a band called Sex Execs: engineers Paul Q. Kolderie, Sean Slade, and Jim Fitting. Its first location was 169 Norfolk Avenue, a warehouse in the Roxbury, Massachusetts, Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. As Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom noted, it was the height of the crack epidemic, and Roxbury was a dangerous place. As a result, Harvard gave the studio its name after the 1981 movie ''Fort Apache, The Bronx'', which was set in a crime-ridden neighborhood. The team took a do-it-yourself approach. Domino Recording Company or simply Domino is a British independent record label based in London. There is also a wing of the label based in Brooklyn, New York that handles releases in the United States, as well as a German division called Domino Deutschland and a French division called Domino France.
