Rocket City Roller Derby is a women's flat track roller derby league located in Huntsville, Alabama. Founded in December 2004 as Dixie Derby Girls, the league is a charter member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). History and organization The Dixie Derby Girls were formed in 2004. In 2006, with two home teams, the Thrill Killers and the Red Hot Riots, the league started holding games at Roller Time. An All-Star team was formed to play teams from other leagues. The home teams were dissolved in 2008, and the league began using a pair of travel teams, with the A team being the WFTDA charter team. Also in 2008, the league moved its home events to the Von Braun Center. In 2010, the A and B teams adopted new names, the Raging Rockets and Rocket City Rollers respectively. Huntsville is a city in Madison County, Limestone County, and Morgan County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 3 (WFTDA Division 3) was the third level of play in women's flat track roller derby, from 2013 through 2014. Organisation Historically, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) operated four regions, based on geographic location: East Region (WFTDA), East, North Central Region (WFTDA), North Central, South Central Region (WFTDA), South Central and West Region (WFTDA), West. South Central Region (WFTDA)
The Women's Flat Track Derby Association's South Central Region was formed in 2008 when WFTDA changed from having just two regional tournaments (East and West), to five, made up of teams from four regions: East, North Central, South Central and West. For 2011, the region was expanded, taking in leagues from Nebraska and New Mexico. WFTDA has now moved away from the Big 5 WFTDA Championships qualification tournament structure, last competed in 2012. The International Women's Flat Track Derby Association Championships ("WFTDA Championships" or "Champs" for short) are the leading competition for roller derby leagues. Women's Flat Track Derby Association Rankings
Rankings for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) are used to determine placement in overall standings (rather than win–loss record) and also to determine seedings at WFTDA Playoffs. Achieving high rankings is also a goal for teams aiming to increase their stature in the organization. Each year at the end of June, teams are seeded into Division 1 and Division 2 playoff tournaments. Historically, the top 40 teams in the WFTDA as of June 30 were eligible for Division 1 tournaments that season, and the teams ranked 41–60 were eligible for Division 2 tournaments. For 2017, the Division 1 cutoff was reduced to the top 36 teams, with the next 16 teams qualifying for Division 2 Playoffs. The organization was founded in April 2004 as the United Leagues Coalition (ULC), but was renamed in November 2005.
