Rockers (1978 Film)
''Rockers'' is a 1978 Jamaican film by Theodoros Bafaloukos. Several popular reggae artists star in the movie, including Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Dillinger, Robbie Shakespeare, and Jacob Miller.Campbell, Howard (2013)Still Rocking at 35, '' Jamaica Observer'', 18 August 2013. Theodoros Bafaloukos
Theodoros Bafaloukos (May 18, 1946 – 2016) was a director, screenwriter and production designer from Greece known for his work in Jamaica and the U.S. He directed '' Rockers'', the 1970s era film about Jamaican music and culture. Bafaloukos was born on the island of Andros in Greece. He traveled to Jamaica as a photographer in 1975 where he was briefly detained under suspicion of being a CIA spy. He lived on the island and became friends with Augustus Pablo who features in the film. The film became an influential classic. ''TimeOut'' called it a Trenchtown variant on the story of Robin Hood. It premiered at the San Francisco Film Festival in 1978 and was shown at the Cannes Film Festival the same year as Apocalypse Now. It was received enthusiastically. In Jamaican popular culture, a sound system is a group of disc jockeys, engineers and MCs playing ska, rocksteady or reggae music. The sound system is an important part of Jamaican culture and history. History The sound system concept first became popular in the 1940s, in the parish of Kingston. DJs would load up a truck with a generator, turntables, and huge speakers and set up street parties. Tom the Great Sebastian, founded by Chinese-Jamaican businessman Tom Wong, was the first commercially successful sound system and influenced many sound systems that came later. Inner Terrestrials (also referred to as iT!) are a British punk band from South London, England. Originally formed by Jay Terrestrial and Fran Webber, their first gig was in February 1994. Their music is a mix of punk, dub, ska and a touch of folk, with lyrics that are more often than not aggressively political and cover subjects such as anarchism, animal rights, land ownership, the class system, war and many other subjects. Dreadzone
Dreadzone are a British electronic music group. They have released eight studio albums, two live albums, and two compilations. Career Dreadzone were formed in London, England in 1993 when ex-Big Audio Dynamite drummer Greg Roberts teamed up with Tim Bran, who had previously worked as a musician and sound engineer for Julian Cope and who has done production work for artists including London Grammar, Birdy, and the Dutch duo HAEVN.
