Rockcastle County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. Its county seat is Mt. Vernon. The county was founded in 1810 and named for the Rockcastle River, which runs through it. The river, in turn, is named for its majestic rock cliffs. Rockcastle County is part of the Richmond– Berea, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Lexington-Fayette-Richmond- Frankfort, KY Combined Statistical Area. Rockcastle River
The Rockcastle River is a U.S. Geological Survey. It is a tributary of the Cumberland River and therefore, via the Ohio River, part of the Mississippi River watershed. Origin of Name In 1750 it was discovered by Dr. Thomas Walker and his exploring party, known as the Loyal Company. In his journal he named it the ''Lawless River'', describing it as very steep and rocky. It was soon renamed by hunter Isaac Lindsey who founded Rockcastle County in 1767. The river has two forks, the Middle Fork, which forms in southern Jackson County, and the South Fork, which forms in Clay County. Daniel Boone National Forest
The Daniel Boone National Forest (originally the Cumberland National Forest) is a national forest in Kentucky. Established in 1937, it includes of federally owned land within a proclamation boundary. The name of the forest was changed in 1966 in honor of the explorer Daniel Boone. The terrain of the forest is generally rugged, and includes multiple prominent water features. It is home to a range of plant and animal species, although many areas still bear evidence of industrial logging and other practices which took place mostly prior to federal protection. It is a popular recreational and tourist destination which serves a million or more visitors a year, and contains several widely recognized areas which are protected in their own right, including state parks, trails, wilderness areas, and landmarks. The 1872 United States presidential election in Kentucky took place on November 5, 1872, as part of the 1872 United States presidential election. Voters chose 12 representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Kentucky voted for the Liberal Republican candidate, Horace Greeley, over Republican candidate, Ulysses S. Grant. Greeley won Kentucky by a margin of 5.88%.
