"Rockaway Beach" is a song by American punk rock band Ramones, released in 1977 from the band's third studio album '' Rocket to Russia''. The song was written by bassist Dee Dee Ramone in the style of the Beach Boys and early surf rock bands. The song is about Rockaway Beach in Queens, where Dee Dee liked to spend time. Guitarist Johnny Ramone claimed that Dee Dee was "the only real beachgoer" in the group. Released in 1977, it was the Ramones' highest-charting single in their career, peaking at number 66 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Background "Rockaway Beach" was inspired by the actual Rockaway Beach located in New York, where lead singer Joey Ramone was raised. Rockaway Beach is a shoreline area of the Pacific Ocean in the southern portion of Pacifica, California, United States, approximately south of the city of San Francisco. It is located within a gently curving embayment with direct access via Rockaway Beach Avenue and providing easy access to Highway 1. The beach itself is a popular place to visit with many restaurant and shopping venues although erosion has decreased its size over the years. Rockaway Beach is a city in Tillamook County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,312 at the 2010 census. The city houses the Rockaway Beach Old Growth Cedar Preserve, a 46-acre wetlands preserve which opened in 2019. The preserve has an elevated walkway, which terminates at a large cedar tree known as ''The Big Tree'', which is estimated to be 500–900 years old. Stockbridge is a town in Calumet County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,456 at the time of the 2010 census. Rockaway Beach is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. The neighborhood is bounded by Arverne to the east and Rockaway Park to the west. It is named for the Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk, which is the largest urban beach in the United States, stretching from Beach 3rd to Beach 153rd Streets on the Atlantic Ocean. The neighborhood, with 13,000 residents , is also known as the "Irish Riviera" because of its large Irish American population. History Early development What is now Rockaway Beach was formerly two different hamlets, Holland and Hammels. In 1857, Michael P. Holland had purchased land and named the area after himself. Soon afterward, Louis Hammel, an immigrant from Germany, bought a tract of land just east of Holland.
