Rock Run, Alabama
Rock Run is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, Alabama, United States. Rock Run is located on County Route 29, southeast of Centre. History Rock Run had its start as a mining community, and may have been named from a run on the rocks containing iron ore. According to another story, a settler climbing a hill dislodged a rock, and watching it roll down the hill, said "Look at that rock run!" A post office operated under the name Rock Run from 1883 to 1957. Demographics In 1890, it was listed on the U.S. Census as having 360 residents, making it the largest incorporated community in Cherokee County, narrowly ahead of Centre, the county seat. Rock Run is a tributary of Martins Creek in Lower Makefield Township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in the United States. Statistics Rock Run was entered into the Geographic Names Information System of the U.S. Geological Survey on 2 August 1979 as identification number 1185276. It is also listed in the Pennsylvania Gazatteer of Streams as identification number 02922. Course Rock Run rises near Big Oak Road and Stony Hill Road in the southern portion of Lower Makefield Township at an elevation of approximately and is generally east oriented until river mile 2.87 where it makes a 90° turn to the right flowing south as it receives a tributary from the left. After about a mile it then turns east, then south and southwest until it discharges at Martins Creek's 3.20 river mile. Rock Run School
Rock Run School was built as a one-room school house in the late 19th century. Today it is regarded as offering a strong insight into the state of black education in the years between the U.S. Civil War and ''Brown vs. Board of Education''. This Henry County, Virginia school soon added another room, and operated as an educational institution until the mid-1950s, when it was consolidated into a larger segregated school. Similar to most other black schools, Rock Run School was painfully underfunded throughout its history, stunting the development and materials available to the school.
