Rock Ferry High School
Rock Ferry High School was a secondary school located in Rock Ferry, Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Wirral, England. History Rock Ferry opened in the 1920s and was a boy's grammar school originally until it became a boys comprehensive school, girls started to join in 1985, initially in the sixth form due to the relative strength of the teaching at sixth form level and later girls entered at lower school level. Some students from that school died in World War II and there was a plaque of their names in the foyer of the school. The school was formally merged with Park High School in January 2011 to create University Academy Birkenhead (now Birkenhead Park School). On 13 April 2011, over 100 pupils aging 12–16 from RFHS began to protest over teachers redundancies and the merger with Park High School in central Birkenhead, it ended with police having to step in but there were no serious incidents apart from a few arguments. Birkenhead
Birkenhead (; cy, Penbedw) is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England; historically, it was part of Cheshire until 1974. The town is on the Wirral Peninsula, along the south bank of the River Mersey, opposite Liverpool. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 88,818. Birkenhead Priory and the Mersey Ferry were established in the 12th century. In the 19th century, Birkenhead expanded greatly as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution. Birkenhead Park and Hamilton Square were laid out as well as the first street tramway in Britain. The Mersey Railway connected Birkenhead and Liverpool with the world's first tunnel beneath a tidal estuary; the shipbuilding firm Cammell Laird and a seaport were established. In the second half of the 20th century, the town suffered a significant period of decline, with containerisation causing a reduction in port activity. The Hours (band)
The Hours was an English rock band, formed in 2004 by Antony Genn and Martin Slattery. Career Antony Genn got his start as a 16-year-old joining Pulp and went on to play with Elastica and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. He went on to co-write a number of songs with Robbie Williams, Josh Homme, Brian Eno, Ian Brown from The Stone Roses, Scott "Walker" Engel, Jarvis Cocker, Lee Hazlewood and others, along with writing and producing scores for film and television. Martin Slattery is an established pianist and keyboard player, who had previously toured with Shaun Ryder’s group Black Grape. Both Genn and Slattery also have worked with Joe Strummer as a part the group the Mescaleros, and Slattery has written and worked with KT Tunstall, Grace Jones and Joe Strummer. Gareth Thomas (born 25 September 1954) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was Member of Parliament for Clwyd West from 1997 to 2005. Norman Thelwell (3 May 1923 – 7 February 2004) was an English cartoonist well known for his humorous illustrations of ponies and horses. Life and career Born in Birkenhead, Thelwell spent World War II in the East Yorkshire Regiment, having signed up at the age of 18 in 1941, and was art editor of an army magazine in New Delhi, India. His first published cartoon, in the ''London Opinion'', was an Indian subject. In 1944, he took evening classes in art at Nottingham Art School. A fellow art student, Rhona, became his wife in 1949. They had one son and one daughter. Alex Hay (10 May 1933 – 11 July 2011) was a Scottish professional golfer, golf instructor, writer and a former BBC sports commentator.
