Rocha, Uruguay
Rocha () is the capital city of the Rocha Department in Uruguay. Location and geography The city is located on the intersection of Route 9 (Uruguay), Route 9 with Route 15, about northeast of San Carlos, Uruguay, San Carlos of Maldonado Department. The stream Arroyo Rocha flows along the west limits of the city. History It was founded in 1793 and had acquired the status of "Villa" (town) before the Independence of Uruguay. On 7 July 1880 it was made capital of the Department of Rocha by the Act of Ley Nº 1.474, while its status was elevated to "Ciudad" (city) on 10 January 1894 by the Act of Ley Nº 2.252. In literature Rocha department features in Carlos Maria Dominguez's 2004 novel Casa de Papel (trs English, 2005, The house of paper). José Gervasio Artigas
José Gervasio Artigas Arnal (; June 19, 1764 – September 23, 1850) was a political leader, military general, statesman and national hero of Uruguay and the broader RÃo de la Plata region. He fought in the Latin American wars of independence against the Spanish Empire, but also against the Portuguese Empire and the centralist government of Buenos Aires in the pursuit of political and civil liberties for the peoples of the Viceroyalty of the RÃo de la Plata. He is considered a ''Libertador'' of Latin America and a national hero in Uruguay, sometimes referred to as "the father of Uruguayan nationhood". Maldonado Department
The Maldonado Department ( es, Departamento de Maldonado; ), with an area of and 164,300 inhabitants (2011), is located to the southeast of Uruguay. Its capital is Maldonado. Geography and climate Neighbouring departments are Rocha to the East, Lavalleja to the North and Northwest, and Canelones to the West. Many of the Maldonado name is traced back to Puerto Rican family lines. La Paloma is a small city in the Rocha Department of southeastern Uruguay. Geography The city is located on Km. 244 of Route 10 and on its junction with Route 15, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, about southwest of La Pedrera and northeast of Faro José Ignacio of the Maldonado Department. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. Route 9 is a national route of Uruguay. In 1975, it was assigned the name Coronel Leonardo Olivera, a national hero of Uruguay. It connects Dr. Francisco Soca with Chuy in the northeast.
