Roby, Merseyside
Roby is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley, Merseyside, England. It was previously administratively linked with its neighbour Huyton by the Huyton-with-Roby civil parish and Huyton with Roby Urban District. Like Huyton, Roby is effectively a dormitory village or suburb of the neighbouring City of Liverpool. At the 2001 Census, the population of Roby was 9,353, (4,511 males, 4,842 females). reducing to 7,254 at the 2011 Census. Roby is the location of the sixth form centre of Knowsley Community College. History Roby grew from a tenth-century Norse settlement named ''Rabil'', meaning "boundary farm/village". Roby is therefore mentioned, as ''Rabil'', in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086. Roby, Texas
Roby is a city in and the county seat of Fisher County, Texas, United States. The population was 643 at the 2010 census. History In 1885, shortly after Fisher County was organized, a dispute arose between business partners from Mississippi and a town called Fisher. Both wanted their land to host the courthouse. The partners were M.L. and D.C. Roby, and the town of Fisher is now called North Roby. In 1886, construction was begun on the new courthouse and a school and post office opened. The community had 13 houses by that summer. In 1890, the population was estimated to be 300 people and the town had a hotel, two general stores, Baptist and Methodist churches, a restaurant, and a weekly newspaper, the ''Fisher County Call''. Roby had no jail until 1892, when one was constructed out of stone. A new jail was built in 1926 out of brick, and remained in use until 2016. Courtney E. Roby (born January 10, 1983) is a former American football wide receiver, drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, following a historical college football career at Indiana. Roby has also played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons. Early years Roby attended North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana where he starred in both football and track for the Panthers. As a senior at North Central High School, Roby was an All-State selection in football, after rushing for 539 yards and six touchdowns, catching 12 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns, while averaging 32 yards per kickoff return and returning three for touchdowns. Isaiah Roby (born February 3, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. High school career Roby attended Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois. He joined a team that finished its previous season with a 1–28 record, but in his final three years at Dixon, he led the team to a combined 76–13 record. In his junior season, Roby averaged 12.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 3.7 blocks per game, earning second-team all-state Class 3A honors. As a senior, he averaged 19.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3.9 blocks per game. Martha Kehres Roby ( ; née Dubina; born July 26, 1976) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the U.S. representative for from 2011 to 2021. A member of the Republican Party, she defeated the incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative Bobby Bright in 2010. That year, Roby and Terri Sewell became the first women elected to Congress from Alabama in regular elections. On July 26, 2019, Roby announced she would retire from Congress at the end of her fifth term, which ended in 2021. Reginald Henry Roby (July 30, 1961 – February 22, 2005) was an American professional football player who was a punter in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons during the 1980s and 1990s. He played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and was recognized as a consensus All-American. He played professionally for the Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston/Tennessee Oilers, and San Francisco 49ers of the NFL. John Roby (5 January 1793 – 18 June 1850) was an English banker, poet, and writer. Life Roby was born in Wigan, England in 1793, the son of Mary Aspull and a schoolmaster named Nehemiah Roby. He began his career as a banker in Rochdale, Lancashire. In his work '' Lancashire Sketches'', Edwin Waugh recalled that, while Roby was working for the firm of Fenton and Roby in Rochdale, Waugh worked as an apprentice at the bookshop next door. For the clergy of the district, and for a certain class of politicians, this shop was the chief rendezvous of the place. Henry John Roby
Henry John Roby (20 August 1830 – 2 January 1915), was an English classical scholar and writer on Roman law, and a Liberal Member of Parliament. He was a Cambridge Apostle. Early life and Cambridge Roby was the son of a solicitor and was born in Tamworth, and was educated at Bridgnorth Grammar School. He won a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge in 1849. He graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in 1853, and was the "Senior Classic" or top classics student of that year. He was made a fellow of St John's College in the following year. He worked as a lecturer and private tutor in Cambridge from 1854 to 1861. He was, however, highly critical of the administration of the university. In particular he felt that the constituent colleges were prone to pursue policies in complete isolation from each other, leading to frequent conflicts.
