Robin Fåhræus
Robert (Robin) Sanno Fåhræus, born 15 October 1888 in Stockholm, died 18 September 1968 in Lund, was a Swedish medical researcher noted for his contributions to hemorheology. Biography Fåhræus was the son of art historian Klas Fåhraeus and actress Olga Björkegren. He commenced studies at Karolinska Institute in 1908, where he received his medical license in 1922. Before that, in 1921, he had completed his research doctorate with the title ''The suspension-stability of the blood''. He became associate professor of experimental pathology at the Karolinska Institute in 1922. He was professor of pathology at Uppsala University from 1928 to 1947, and professor of general pathology and pathological anatomy in Uppsala from 1947 to 1955, after his previous chair had been split in two. Fåhræus became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1935. In 1966, the International Society of Hemorheology awarded him their first Poiseuille medal, the Society's highest award. ...

Theodor Svedberg
Theodor Svedberg (30 August 1884 – 25 February 1971) was a Swedish chemist and Nobel laureate for his research on colloids and proteins using the ultracentrifuge. Svedberg was active at Uppsala University from the mid 1900s to late 1940s. While at Uppsala, Svedberg started as a docent before becoming the university's physical chemistry head in 1912. After leaving Uppsala in 1949, Svedberg was in charge of the Gustaf Werner Institute until 1967. Apart from his 1926 Nobel Prize, Svedberg was named a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1944 and became part of the National Academy of Sciences in 1945. Viscosity
The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to deformation at a given rate. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal concept of "thickness": for example, syrup has a higher viscosity than water. Viscosity quantifies the internal frictional force between adjacent layers of fluid that are in relative motion. For instance, when a viscous fluid is forced through a tube, it flows more quickly near the tube's axis than near its walls. Experiments show that some stress (such as a pressure difference between the two ends of the tube) is needed to sustain the flow. Fåhræus–Lindqvist Effect
The Fåhraeus–Lindqvist effect describes how the viscosity of a fluid, in this case blood, changes with the diameter of the tube it travels through. In particular there is a 'decrease in viscosity as the tube's diameter ''decreases (although only with a tube diameter of between 10 and 300 micrometers). This is because erythrocytes move over to the centre of the vessel, leaving only blood plasma, plasma near the wall of the vessel. History The effect was first documented by a German group in 1930. Fåhræus Effect
The Fåhræus effect is the decrease in average concentration of red blood cells in human blood as the diameter of the glass tube in which it is flowing decreases. In other words, in blood vessels with diameters less than 500 micrometers, the hematocrit decreases with decreasing capillary diameter.
