Roberto Ribeiro
Dermeval Miranda Maciel, best known as Roberto Ribeiro. (Campos dos Goytacazes, July 20, 1940 – January 8, 1996) was a Brazilian samba singer. Life Son of a gardener, he had already begun working at 9 years of age. By that time, he attended the samba school Amigos da Farra (Friends of Farra), from the city of Campos, and the Pintadinho Boi parties, a local tradition event. Player of professional football in his hometown, he played in Cruzeiro and Rio Branco, both of Campos. He was known by nickname "pneu" ("tire"). Later he was the Goitacaz's goalkeeper and in 1965 moved to Rio de Janeiro and tried to serve in Fluminense, but failed. However, in Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Ribeiro started to be involved by samba. Even in the 1960s, he has been present in a radio show called ""A Hora do Trabalhador" ("The Labor Time"). Campos dos Goytacazes () is a municipality located in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, with a population of 471,737 inhabitants. Location Campos dos Goytacazes has an area of 4,032 km2 (1,557 sq mi), which makes it the largest municipality in the state by area, and its elevation is 14 m. Its name comes from the geographical characteristic of the region, very flat with fields (''campos'' in Portuguese) and from the Goytacazes Indians, which inhabited the region. Elza Soares
Elza da Conceição Soares ( née Gomes; 23 June 1930 – 20 January 2022), known professionally as Elza Soares (), was a Brazilian samba singer. In 1999, she was named Singer of the Millennium along with Tina Turner by BBC Radio. Elza was deemed dangerous by the Military dictatorship in Brazil (1964–1985), and in 1970 her house in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, was machine-gunned by regime agents. Inside were her partner Garrincha and their children. The living room, where the young children were, was destroyed by the blasts. She and Garrincha had to flee to Italy, where they were received by Chico Buarque de Hollanda also in exile. Yvonne Lara da Costa (April 13, 1921 – April 16, 2018), better known as Dona Ivone Lara, was a Brazilian singer and composer. Biography Dona Ivone Lara was born as Yvonne Lara da Costa in Rio de Janeiro. She graduated in nursing, with specialization in Occupational Therapy, and worked as a social worker until she retired in 1977. With this professional background, she worked in psychiatric hospitals, where she knew Nise da Silveira. With the death of her mother when she was three, and of her father when she was twelve, Dona Ivone was raised by aunts and uncles and with them she learned to play the cavaquinho. Samba-enredo
Samba-enredo, also known as samba de enredo, is a sub-genre of modern samba made specifically by a samba school for the festivities of Brazilian Carnival. It is a samba style that consists of a lyric and a melody created from a summary of the theme chosen as the plot of a samba school. The first sambas sung by the samba schools in their carnival presentations were freely created and generally were about of the samba itself or the reality of the samba musicians.
