Roberta Blackman-Woods
Roberta Carol Blackman-Woods (' Woods; 16 August 1957) is a British academic and former Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the City of Durham from 2005 to 2019. Early life and career Blackman-Woods is from Northern Ireland and was educated at the University of Ulster, graduating with a BSc degree and later a PhD in social science. Following this she was employed by Newcastle City Council, before going on to pursue a career in academia. As a sociologist with expertise in housing, she served as professor of social policy and an associate dean in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Northumbria prior to her election, and had previously been dean of social and labour studies at Ruskin College, Oxford and head of policy at the Local Government Information Unit. The Minister for Civil Society was a position within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in the Government of the United Kingdom. It concerned and directly supported charities, volunteering and social enterprise. The office was established during the third Blair ministry as Minister for the Third Sector. Mary Foy (politician)
Mary Kelly Foy (; born 27 February 1968) is a British Labour Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the City of Durham since the 2019 general election. She is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group parliamentary caucus. Early life and education Foy was born in Jarrow, County Durham, and grew up on a council estate. She is the second of five children and her grandparents were Irish immigrants. Her father is a former shipyard worker who lost his job in the 1980s under Margaret Thatcher's premiership. Foy has a degree in social sciences, which she gained as a mature student. Career Foy is a member of both UNISON and Unite the Union. Social Science
Social science is one of the branches of science, devoted to the study of societies and the relationships among individuals within those societies. The term was formerly used to refer to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 19th century.
