Robert Yarington
Robert Yarington (fl. 1601), was an English playwright, most famous for his play, Two Tragedies in One, which has two concurrent plots. One of these tells of the murder and gruesome dismembering of Mr Beech, a chaundler in Thames Street, and his boy, by Thomas Merry, the other of a young child murdered in a wood by two ruffians, with the consent of his uncle. In the concurrent plot, set in Padua, Falleria witnesses the will of his dying brother Pandino (which bequeaths all his wealth to his son Pertillo), and in order to cheat his nephew of the inheritance has him murdered by two ruffians. Falleria is eventually undone by the dying testimony of one of the ruffians, and is sentenced to death by the Duke of Padua. In the 'London' plot, Merry is finally brought to justice by the 'accidental' testimony of his former servant Harry Williams. A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays. Etymology The word "play" is from Middle English pleye, from Old English plæġ, pleġa, plæġa ("play, exercise; sport, game; drama, applause"). The word "wright" is an archaic English term for a craftsman or builder (as in a wheelwright or cartwright). The words combine to indicate a person who has "wrought" words, themes, and other elements into a dramatic form—a play. (The homophone with "write" is coincidental.) The first recorded use of the term "playwright" is from 1605, 73 years before the first written record of the term "dramatist". Thames Street, divided into Lower and Upper Thames Street, is a road in the City of London, the historic and financial centre of London. It forms part of the busy A roads in Zone 3 of the Great Britain numbering scheme, A3211 route (prior to being rebuilt as a major thoroughfare in the late 1960s, it was the B132) from Tower Hill to Westminster. Philip Henslowe
Philip Henslowe (c. 1550 – 6 January 1616) was an Elizabethan theatrical entrepreneur and impresario. Henslowe's modern reputation rests on the survival of his diary, a primary source for information about the theatrical world of Renaissance London. Life Henslowe was born in Lindfield, Sussex, into a family with roots in Devon. His father, Edmund Henslowe, was appointed Master of the Game for Ashdown Forest, Sussex, from 1539 until his death in 1562. Before Edmund Henslowe's death, his daughter Margaret had married Ralf Hogge, an ironmaster. By the 1570s, Henslowe had moved to London, becoming a member of the Dyers' Company. Henslowe is recorded working as assistant to Henry Woodward, reputed to be the bailiff for Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montagu, owner of Cowdray House and Battle Abbey in Sussex. William Haughton (died 1605) was an England, English playwright in the age of English Renaissance theatre.Chisholm, Hugh, ed. "Haughton, William". In ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' (11th ed.). John Day (dramatist)
John Day (1574–1638?) was an English dramatist of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Life He was born at Cawston, Norfolk, and educated at Ely. He became a sizar of Caius College, Cambridge, in 1592, but was expelled in the next year for stealing a book. He became one of Philip Henslowe's playwrights, collaborating with Henry Chettle, William Haughton, Thomas Dekker, Richard Hathwaye and Wentworth Smith. There are 22 plays to which he is linked. However his almost incessant activity does not seem to have paid, to judge by the small loans, of five shillings and even two shillings, that he obtained from Henslowe. Little is known of his life beyond these small details, and disparaging references by Ben Jonson in 1618/19, describing him, (with Dekker and Edward Sharpham) as a "rogue" and (with Thomas Middleton and Gervase Markham) as a "base fellow". Henry Chettle
Henry Chettle (c. 1564 – c. 1606) was an English dramatist and miscellaneous writer of the Elizabethan era, best known for his pamphleteering. Early life The son of Robert Chettle, a London dyer, he was apprenticed in 1577 and became a member of the Stationer's Company in 1584, traveling to Cambridge on their behalf in 1588. His career as a printer and author is shadowy. He may have set up some of the tracts printed in response to Martin Marprelate. In 1591, he entered into partnership with William Hoskins and John Danter, two stationers. Frederick Gard Fleay
Frederick Gard Fleay (5 September 1831 – 10 March 1909) was an influential and prolific nineteenth-century William Shakespeare, Shakespeare scholar. Life Fleay, the son of a linen draper, graduated from King's College London (1849) and Trinity College, Cambridge (1853), where he received mathematical training that was key to his later achievements. He was ordained in the Church of England (1856), and for twenty years pursued a career in education, as a teacher and headmaster. (Fleay left the Church in 1884.)
