Robert Chapman Turner
Robert Chapman Turner (July 22, 1913 – July 26, 2005) was an American potter known for his functional pottery, sculptural vessels and inspired teaching. Born in Port Washington, New York, Turner attended Swarthmore College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1936. He then studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1949. Turner established the studio pottery program at Black Mountain College in North Carolina between 1949 and 1951. Later he returned to Alfred Station, establishing himself as a studio potter. In 1958, he joined the Alfred University faculty, where he remained until his retirement as Professor Emeritus of Ceramic Art in 1979. Robert Turner (Bahá'Ã)
Robert Chaittle Turner ( – June 15, 1909) was the first African American Bahá’à and one of the nineteen Disciples of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. Life Robert Turner was born on a farm outside of Norfolk, Virginia in the mid-1850s. As a teenager, Turner moved to California and worked for the Palace Hotel. In 1881 Turner went to work for George Hearst. Turner's employment with the Hearst family spanned thirty-five years, beginning in the 1870s as George Hearst's valet, followed by his roles as steward and butler. In 1891, Turner and his wife, Melissa Turner, attended the funeral of George Hearst in Washington, D.C. at the invitation of Phoebe Hearst. Turner first heard of the Bahá’à Faith from early American Bahá’à Lua Getsinger when she visited Phoebe Hearst in California in 1898. Robert Turner (died 28 November 1599) was a Scottish Catholic divine. Biography Turner was descended from a Scottish family, was born at Barnstaple, Devonshire. He was educated for a time at Exeter College, Oxford, and at Christ's College, Cambridge, whence he matriculated in 1567, but left each university without a degree. In after years he said: "Non ego nunc, ut anteà , ætatem meam in nugis (ne quid gravius dicam) Oxonii apud homines hæreseos crimine obstrictos, neque in fabulis domi apud homines nulla politiori literatura excultos, otiosè, turpiter, nequiter contererem". Leaving his country and parents on account of his attachment to the Roman Catholic religion, he went in 1572 to the English College at Douai, where he became professor of rhetoric, and was ordained priest in 1574.
