Robert Turner (poker Player)
Robert Turner is an American professional poker player based in Downey, California. Turner is known for introducing Omaha hold 'em into poker-playing circles. He introduced the game to Bill Boyd, who offered it as a game at the Golden Nugget Casino (calling it "Nugget Hold'em".) Robert Turner created Live At The Bike and Legends of Poker, for the Bicycle Casino. Turner also created The Grand Slam of Poker at Hustler Casino and The National Championship Of Poker for Hollywood Park Casino. In 1999 Turner created World Team Poker. Turner began playing in the 1970s and has won a Best All-Around Player Award at least once per decade since. Turner won the 1986 Grand Prix of Poker. Turner won a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in 1993 in the $1,500 seven-card stud event. Larry Flynt's Lucky Lady Casino is a cardroom located in Gardena, California. It replaced Normandie Casino. In 1940, the Western Club opened on Western Avenue. Seven years later, the club was renamed the Normandie, and Russ Miller became owner. As the city of Gardena grew, so did the card clubs. Their license fees provided most of the money needed to operate the city. During the 1960s, Gardena boasted six luxurious card clubs. It was the only city in Los Angeles County to have legal gambling. The clubs flourished until 1980, when the Bell Club in the city of Bell, California, opened. Other cities soon followed suit, and the Gardena monopoly on card gaming came to an end. The 2005 World Series of Poker opened play on June 2nd, continuing through the Main Event No Limit World Championship starting on July 7th. The conclusion of the Main Event on July 15th marked the close of play, and the largest prize in sports and/or television history at the time ($7,500,000) was awarded to the winner. ESPN's broadcast began July 19th with coverage of WSOP Circuit Tournaments, and coverage of the Main Event began October 11th and ended November 15th.
