Robert Thomas (Ap Vychan)
Robert Thomas (1809 - 1880), also known by the bardic name Ap Vychan, was a Welsh Independent minister, poet and man of letters. He won the chair at the national eisteddfod on two occasions. Biography Ap Vychan was the third child of a well-educated, man of culture, Dafydd Thomas (Dewi ap Didymus), born 11 August 1809 at Pennantlliw-bach, Llanuwchllyn. He was home schooled by his father, who taught him to write poetry along with reading, writing and counting and, in 1863, Ap Vychan published a memoir of his father in which he recounts his childhood. National Eisteddfod Of Wales
The National Eisteddfod of Wales (Welsh language, Welsh: ') is the largest of several eisteddfodau that are held annually, mostly in Wales. Its eight days of competitions and performances are considered the largest music and poetry festival in Europe. Competitors typically number 6,000 or more, and overall attendance generally exceeds 150,000 visitors. The 2018 Cardiff National Eisteddfod, 2018 Eisteddfod was held in Cardiff Bay with a fence-free 'Maes (eisteddfod), Maes'. Llanuwchllyn
Llanuwchllyn () is a village and community in Gwynedd, Wales, near the southern end of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid). It is one of the most sparsely populated communities in Wales. The electoral ward includes the small settlement of Llangywer. The parish church of St Deiniol is a Grade II* listed building. Llanuwchllyn railway station is the headquarters of the narrow gauge Bala Lake Railway, centred on the former Great Western Railway station on the standard-gauge line from Ruabon to Barmouth. The village was the birthplace of Welsh language author and educationalist Owen Morgan Edwards. Caer Gai, a Roman fort near Llanuwchllyn, was traditionally known as the home of Cei, the character in the Arthurian legend known in English as Sir Kay. Cymreigyddion Society
The Cymreigyddion Society ( cy, Cymdeithas y Cymreigyddion) was a London-based Welsh social, cultural and debating society, which existed from 1794 or 1795 until about 1855. History The Cymreigyddion Society was stated in later accounts to have been founded in 1795, although a reference to a meeting on 19 November 1794 suggests that it may have assembled informally at a slightly earlier date. It was established by a group of twelve expatriate Welshmen resident in London, most if not all of whom were members of the existing Gwyneddigion Society (founded 1770), and who included Jac Glan-y-gors (John Jones). At a slightly later date Iolo Morganwg (Edward Williams) was also a member. The last record of the Society's existence, when it was clearly barely surviving, is from 1855; and it had disappeared by 1858.
