Robert Smith (baseball)
Robert E. "Ish" Smith, (May 15, 1936 – August 18, 2021) was the President of the International Baseball Federation, which is the international governing body for the sport of baseball, and the United States Baseball Federation. As President of the International Baseball Association from 1981 to 1993, he is the person most credited with having had the sport of baseball added into the Olympic Games as an official gold medal sport. For these efforts, he was a recipient of the Olympic Order, the highest honor given by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Baseball career Smith graduated from Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois in 1957. He went to work at the college a few years after graduation as a physical education instructor and baseball coach, in 1961. The International Baseball Federation (IBAF; Spanish: ''Federación Internacional de Béisbol'', French: ''Fédération internationale de baseball'') is the former worldwide governing body recognized by the International Olympic Committee as overseeing, deciding and executing the policy of the sport of baseball. The IBAF has since become the international baseball "Division" of the World Baseball Softball Confederation, the officially recognized world governing body for baseball (and softball). Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. Manuel Ricardo González Guerra (April 25, 1914April 18, 1997) was a Cuban baseball executive and president of the International Baseball Federation (then known as the ''Asociación Internacional de Béisbol Amateur'', or AINBA) from 1976 to 1980. He was the first president of the organization elected after the splinter group FEMBA rejoined in 1976. González, a boxer and amateur baseball player in his youth, was president of the Cuban amateur baseball league from 1950 to 1961. After the Cuban Revolution, he established the Cuban Baseball Federation as part of the INDER, the new sports ministry. González was also president of the Cuban Olympic Committee. His election to the AINBA presidency in 1976 was partly due to his ties with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as AINBA sought to gain recognition for baseball as an Olympic sport. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is an international non-profit Christian sports ministry founded in 1954 and based in Kansas City, Missouri. It has staff offices located throughout the United States and abroad.
