Robert Schuman Centre For Advanced Studies
The European University Institute (EUI) is an international postgraduate and post-doctoral teaching and research institute and an independent body of the European Union with juridical personality, established by the member states to contribute to cultural and scientific development in the social sciences, in a European perspective. EUI is designated as an international organisation. It is located in the hills above Florence in Fiesole, Italy. In 2021, EUI's School of Transnational Governance, with its flagship graduate and executive programmes, moved to the Casino Mediceo di San Marco, which is a late-Renaissance or Mannerist style palace in the historic centre of Florence. The State Of The Union (European University Institute)
The State of the Union (SOU) is an annual forum for high level reflection on the European Union organized by the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, since 2011. The conference acts as a bridge between academia and policy making in Europe, bringing together heads of states, presidents and representatives of EU institutions, academic experts, business and opinion leaders, NGOs, think tanks, journalists and representatives of civil society. The conference has addressed topics including climate, migration, surveillance and freedom, the role of Europe in a globalized world, the Eurozone crisis, gender, citizenship, solidarity, 21st-century democracy and Europe's management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social Sciences
Social science is one of the branches of science, devoted to the study of societies and the relationships among individuals within those societies. Historical Archives Of The European Union
The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), located in Florence (Italy), is the official archives for the historical documents of the Institutions of the European Union. It is also a research centre dedicated to the archival preservation and study of European integration and is part of the European University Institute (EUI). Legal Basis and History The Historical Archives of the European Union was established in 1983 following the regulation by the Council of the European Communities and the decision by the Commission of the European Communities to open their historical archives to the public. A subsequent agreement in 1984 between the Commission of the European Communities and the EUI laid the groundwork for establishing the Archives in Florence, and the HAEU opened its doors to researchers and the public in 1986. Brigid Laffan
Brigid Laffan is an Irish political scientist and Emeritus professor at Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. ''Politico Europe'' ranked her among women who shape Europe in November 2018. Education Laffan graduated in 1977 from National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE). After graduating, Laffan became a research co-ordinator at the College of Europe in Bruges. Career In 2013, Laffan joined the European University Institute in Florence, where she was appointed as Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Daniele Caramani
Daniele Caramani (Milan, 26 June 1968) is a comparative political scientist. Education Daniele Caramani grew up in Milan and Paris. He holds a baccalauréat (international option) from the Lycée International de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. After the BA and MA at the University of Geneva, he obtained his Ph.D. at the European University Institute, Florence. He attended the Essex and Michigan methods summer schools. Academic career Caramani started his career in 1991 at the University of Geneva as teaching assistant in methods and comparative politics. European Commission
The European Commission (EC) is the executive of the European Union (EU). It operates as a cabinet government, with 27 members of the Commission (informally known as "Commissioners") headed by a President. It includes an administrative body of about 32,000 European civil servants. The Commission is divided into departments known as Directorates-General (DGs) that can be likened to departments or ministries each headed by a Director-General who is responsible to a Commissioner. Stefano Bartolini
Stefano Bartolini (born January 22, 1952) is an Italian political scientist and professor at European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He is the author of many books and publications. Activities Bartolini is the editor of the Italian political science journal, ''Italian Political Science Review''. Bartolini's research in political science includes research on electoral changes in Europe during the 1980s, which found that gains and losses at the party level did not translate into large changes at the bloc level. In terms of aggregate scores, the gains of parties within a bloc, whether left-wing or right-wing, were offset by the losses of other parties within the same bloc. According to Bartolini, the integration of Europe reverses the centuries-long process of national boundary construction. Helen Wallace
Dame Helen Sarah Wallace, Lady Wallace of Saltaire, DBE, CMG, FBA, MAE, FAcSS (born 25 June 1946 in Whalley Range, Manchester), née Rushworth, is a British expert in European studies and, by marriage to William Wallace, Baron Wallace of Saltaire, a peeress. She was Foreign Secretary of the British Academy from 2011 to 2015. She attended Oxford University (1963–67), where she was President of the Oxford University Liberal Club and where she obtained a BA in Classics. Robert Schuman
Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Robert Schuman (; 29 June 18864 September 1963) was a Luxembourg-born French statesman. Schuman was a Christian Democrat (Popular Republican Movement) political thinker and activist. Twice Prime Minister of France, a reformist Minister of Finance and a Foreign Minister, he was instrumental in building postwar European and trans-Atlantic institutions and was one of the founders of the European Union, the Council of Europe and NATO. The 1964–1965 academic year at the College of Europe was named in his honour. In 2021, Schuman was declared venerable by Pope Francis in recognition of his acting on Christian principles. Joseph Halevi Horowitz Weiler (born 2 September 1951) is a South African-American academic, currently serving as European Union Jean Monnet Chair at New York University Law School and Senior Fellow of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard.
