Robert Milton Speer
Robert Milton Speer (September 8, 1838 – January 17, 1890) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Robert M. Speer was born in Cassville, Pennsylvania. He attended Cassville Academy, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced practice in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was elected assistant clerk of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1863. Speer was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1874. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1872 and 1880. He resumed the practice of law and in 1876 became one of the proprietors of the '' Huntingdon Monitor''. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress. Huntingdon Monitor
Huntingdon is a market town in the Huntingdonshire district in Cambridgeshire, England. The town was given its town charter by King John in 1205. It was the county town of the historic county of Huntingdonshire. Oliver Cromwell was born there in 1599 and became one of its Members of Parliament (MP) in 1628. The former Conservative Prime Minister (1990–1997) John Major served as its MP from 1979 until his retirement in 2001. History Huntingdon was founded by the Anglo-Saxons and Danes. It is first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 921, where it appears as ''Huntandun''. It appears as ''Huntedun'' in the Domesday Book of 1086. John Reilly (Pennsylvania)
John Reilly (February 22, 1836 – April 19, 1904) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. John Reilly was born in Abnerville, Pennsylvania. He received home instruction and attended the public schools. He entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad, on April 10, 1854. He was appointed superintendent of transportation April 1, 1865. He served until his resignation in 1875, having been elected to Congress. He served as president of the Bells Gap Railroad from 1871 to 1873 and president of the board of city commissioners of Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1872 and 1873. Reilly was elected as a Democrat in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876. The 1880 United States House of Representatives elections, coincided with the 1880 presidential election which was won by James A. Garfield, who was a member of the House at the time. Issues such as Civil War loyalties, tariffs, graft and corruption dominated the year's elections, though none became substantive a national issue. The economy was growing stronger after emerging from a long Depression. It was in this political environment that Garfield's Republican Party gained 19 seats and regained control of the House from the Democratic Party. The Greenback Party, an emerging party of workers and farmers, also lost seats in these elections, after gaining more than a dozen two years earlier. The 1880 Democratic National Convention was held June 22 to 24, 1880, at the Music Hall in Cincinnati, Ohio, and nominated Winfield S. Hancock of Pennsylvania for president and William H. English of Indiana for vice president in the United States presidential election of 1880. Six men were officially candidates for nomination at the convention, and several more also received votes. Of these, the two leading candidates were Hancock and Thomas F. Bayard of Delaware. Not officially a candidate, but wielding a heavy influence over the convention, was the Democratic nominee from 1876, Samuel J. Tilden of New York. Many Democrats believed Tilden to have been unjustly deprived of the presidency in 1876 and hoped to rally around him in the 1880 campaign.
