Robert M. Shuter
Dr. Robert Martin Shuter (July 14, 1946 New York - May 4, 2021 Chicago) was an American author, academic, and consultant specializing in intercultural communication. He was Research Professor at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University and Professor Emeritus at the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University, where he taught for 41 years and chaired the Department of Communication Studies for 29 years. Asiacentrism (also Asiacentricity) is an ethnocentric and economics, economic perspective that regards Asia to be either superior, central, or unique relative to other regions. This ideological stance may take the form of ascribing to Asia significance or supremacy at the cost of the rest of the world. The concept arose in the context of a projected Asian Century, the expected economic and cultural dominance of Asia (primarily China) in the 21st century, in the 1990s. Robert Tarbell Oliver (July 7, 1909 – May 29, 2000) was an American writer, lecturer, and an authority on public speaking, argumentation and debate, and Asian rhetorical traditions. Biography Oliver was born in Sweet Home, Oregon. He graduated from Pacific University. He received his M.A. from the University of Oregon in 1933 and earned his Ph.D. in Speech from the University of Wisconsin in 1936. He served as Assistant Director of the Victory Speakers Bureau in the Office of Civilian Defense in Washington, D.C. during World War II.
