Robert MacKay Smith
Robert Mackay Smith FRSE (1802-1888) was a Scottish businessman, meteorologist and philanthropist. Glasgow University's Mackay Smith Prizes were founded by him in 1882. He was the Chairman of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and a Director of the Commercial Bank of Scotland. Life He was born in Glasgow on 24 May 1802 the son of Peter Smith, a flax merchant living at 76 Stirling Street and his wife, Euphemia MacKay. He attended Glasgow University studying Sciences and graduated MA in 1815, aged only thirteen. He moved to Leith in 1834 to work as a commission agent and lived and worked there for most of his life. He originally lived at 4 Windsor Street near the top of Leith Walk. In 1855 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh his proposer being Charles Piazzi Smyth. Bob Smith (December 24, 1958 – January 20, 2018) was an American comedian and author. Born in Buffalo, New York, Smith was the first openly gay comedian to appear on ''The Tonight Show'' and the first openly gay comedian to have his own HBO half-hour comedy special. Smith, along with fellow comedians Jaffe Cohen and Danny McWilliams, formed the comedy troupe Funny Gay Males in 1988. Career With Funny Gay Males, Smith is the co-author of ''Growing Up Gay: From Left Out to Coming Out'' (1995). Smith is also the author of two books of biographical essays. ''Openly Bob'' (1997) received a Lambda Literary Award for best humor book. ''Way to Go, Smith!'' (1999) was nominated for a 2000 Lambda Literary Award in the same category. Robert Allen Smith (born November 18, 1951), better known as Bob Smith, is an American comic book artist, notable as an inker with DC Comics and Archie Comics. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, Smith grew up in Grayland, Washington. After studies at Grays Harbor College, a community college in Aberdeen, he graduated in 1974 from Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University), where he took courses in drawing and painting. After Smith became interested in comic books in 1971, he contributed to Mike Friedrich's '' Star Reach'', published from 1974 to 1979. Robert Emil Schmidt (November 27, 1917 – July 30, 1998), nicknamed Buffalo Bob, was the host of the children's show ''Howdy Doody''. Biography Born in Buffalo, New York, as Robert Emil Schmidt, he attended Masten Park High School. Schmidt got his start in radio in Buffalo at WGR (AM) though switched from WGR to WBEN's late morning radio slot in 1943, as part of a move which also brought Clint Buehlman's early morning show over from WGR to WBEN at the same time. (The WBEN morning slot had opened when its host, future NBC-TV personality Jack Paar, was drafted into the military.)
