Robert Lee "Matty" Mathews (August 6, 1887 – September 1, 1947) was an American football player and coach. He was the head football coach at St. Edward's University, St. Edward's College (1911), Kenyon College (1912–1914), Willamette Bearcats, Willamette University (1915–1920), the Idaho Vandals football, University of Idaho (1922–1925), Saint Louis Billikens#Football, Saint Louis University (1926–1927), Gonzaga Bulldogs football, Gonzaga University (1929), the Portland Pilots, University of Portland (1937–1942), and Lewis & Clark Pioneers football, Lewis & Clark College (1945–1946). The Idaho Vandals are the intercollegiate athletic teams representing the University of Idaho, located in Moscow. The Vandals compete at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Big Sky Conference. The football team was an independent for the 2013 season due to a major wave of departures from the Western Athletic Conference that left just two football-playing schools.
