Robert J. McGuire
Robert Joseph McGuire (born December 8, 1936) is an American attorney and business executive who served as New York City Police Commissioner from 1978 to 1983. Early life McGuire was born on December 8, 1936, in The Bronx and grew up in Throggs Neck. His father, James McGuire, was a New York City Police Department officer who served as the deputy chief of the Emergency Service Unit. McGuire attended Iona College on a basketball scholarship and earned his law degree from St. John's University School of Law. Legal career From 1962 to 1966, McGuire was an assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He left the US attorney’s office to serve as a legal advisor to the commander of the Somali Police Force. The New York City Police Commissioner is the head of the New York City Police Department and presiding member of the Board of Commissioners. The commissioner is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the mayor. The commissioner is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department as well as the appointment of deputies including the Chief of Department and subordinate officers. Commissioners are civilian administrators, and they and their subordinate deputies are civilians under an oath of office, not sworn members of the force. Eric Leroy Adams (born September 1, 1960) is an American politician and retired police captain serving as the 110th mayor of New York City since January 1, 2022. Bruce Ritter
Bruce Ritter (February 25, 1927 – October 7, 1999) was a Catholic priest and one-time Franciscan friar who founded the charity Covenant House in 1972 for homeless teenagers. By the 1980s, it had grown to an $87 million agency, operating numerous large centers in New York and six other major United States cities, as well as locations in Toronto, Canada, and Latin America. In 1990, Ritter was forced to resign from Covenant House after allegations of sexual and financial misconduct. It was one of the most widely publicized cases of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church. However no charges were filed against him. Independent investigation commissioned by the charity found none of the allegations of sexual misconduct can be proved beyond any question, but that cumulative evidence was extensive.
