Robert J. Bernard
Robert James Bernard (February 6, 1894June 9, 1981) was an American academic administrator. He was instrumental in the founding of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of adjacent, affiliated higher education institutions in Claremont, California, and served as its leader from 1942 to 1963. Early life Bernard was born in Collinwood, Ohio, and grew up in Denver, Colorado. He briefly attended Colorado College before transferring to Pomona College when his family moved to Hollywood. He majored in English and graduated in 1917. Career After graduation, he became an assistant to Pomona president James Blaisdell. When the Claremont Colleges were established in 1925, he was appointed secretary under Blaisdell. He became administrative director in 1942; his title changed to managing director in 1944 and president in 1959. Later life Bernard retired in February 1963. Bernard Field Station
The 85 acre Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station (BFS) is located on the north side of Foothill Boulevard between College Avenue and Mills Avenue in Claremont, California. The BFS provides facilities and ecological communities for high-quality teaching and research in biological, environmental, and other sciences to the students, faculty, and staff of the Claremont Colleges. It may also be used by members of other academic institutions and by public groups for educational purposes. The BFS is a member of the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS). James Blaisdell
James Arnold Blaisdell (December 15, 1867January 29, 1957) was an American minister, theologian, and academic administrator. He was the fourth president of Pomona College (1910–1927) and founder and "head fellow" of the Claremont Colleges (1927–1935). Life and career He was born in Beloit, Wisconsin; his father was a philosophy professor at Beloit College. Blaisdell graduated from Beloit College in 1889, and went on to become a minister in Waukesha, Wisconsin for a time, until he went back to Beloit College to be the Chair of the Bible Department, as well as the director of the library, in 1903. He became president of Pomona College in 1910 and the College’s finances, success and visibility quickly increased.
