Robert Herman
Robert Herman (August 29, 1914 – February 13, 1997) was an American scientist, best known for his work with Ralph Alpher in 1948–50, on estimating the temperature of cosmic microwave background radiation from the Big Bang explosion. Biography and career Born in the Bronx, New York City, Herman graduated cum laude with special honors in physics from the City College of New York in 1935, and in 1940 was awarded master's and doctoral degrees in physics from Princeton University in the area of molecular spectroscopy. As a graduate student, Herman already exhibited eclectic tendencies in diverse fields by also working in solid state physics, as well as straddling theory and experiment. He spent the academic year 1940-41 working on the Bush differential analyzer at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, and another year teaching physics at the City College of New York. In 1895 the Berlin Philharmonic premiered his Symphony in C, and much of his further career was spent in Germany. Robert Hermann (mathematician)
Robert C. Hermann (April 28, 1931 – February 10, 2020) was an American mathematician and mathematical physicist. In the 1960s Hermann worked on elementary particle physics and quantum field theory, and published books which revealed the interconnections between vector bundles on Riemannian manifolds and gauge theory in physics, before these interconnections became "common knowledge" among physicists in the 1970s. Spencer, Donald Spencer he received his PhD with thesis ''The Differential geometry of homogeneous spaces''. Robert Alfred Herman
Robert Alfred Herman (1861–1927) was a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, who coached many students to a high wrangler rank in the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos. Herman was senior wrangler in 1882. In the early days of Tripos, coaches were in private business in rooms off-campus. In the 1880s and 1890s instruction at college improved to the point that coaches merely supervised their students’ progress. Under these conditions the tradition of private coaching fell away, and fellows such as Herman coached students. In 1895 C. Godfrey, who counted Herman as coach, ranked fourth wrangler, and in 1897 when P. H. Ezechiel also came in fourth. In 1898 Herman coached A. H. Pocck who came eighth and C. S. Lloyd who came tenth. Robert Dixon Herman (September 24, 1911 – April 5, 1990) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Education and career Born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, Herman received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Bucknell University in 1935 and a Bachelor of Laws from Cornell Law School in 1938. He was in private practice in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania between 1938 and 1958, and was an assistant district attorney of Dauphin County from 1942 to 1944. He was a United States Naval Reserve Lieutenant for the JAG Corps at the end of World War II, from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1948 to 1950, and was a solicitor for Dauphin County from 1950 to 1957. Herman was a Republican. Robert Stephen Herman (born 30 November 1946 in Southampton, Hampshire) is a former English cricketer who played County Cricket for Middlesex from 1965 to 1971 and Hampshire from 1972 to 1977. He played in South Africa for Border in 1972/3 and for Griqualand West in 1974/5. He also played in the Minor Counties Championship for Dorset in 1978 and 1979. Robert Dunton Herman (1928 – April 9, 2021) was an American urban sociologist. He taught at Pomona College for four decades, and became known as an advocate for downtown Los Angeles. Early life and education Herman was born in Champaign, Illinois, and raised in Hillsdale, Michigan. During his childhood, he lived in Tucson, Arizona, and Redlands, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Pomona College in 1951 and a PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
