Robert Hepburn
Colonel Robert Rickart Hepburn of Keith (1720 – 24 May 1804) was Member of Parliament for Kincardineshire 1768–1774. Biography He was the son of James Hepburn of Keith and Katherine Rickart and was educated at Edinburgh high school and the University of Edinburgh. He succeeded to his father's estate at Keith in Haddington and to his mother's estate at Rickarton in Kincardine. He joined the British Army in 1743 as a cornet in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, was promoted captain in 1745, major in 1755, and lieutenant-colonel in 1763. He commanded the Inniskillings at the Battle of Minden in 1759. He sold out of the Army in 1768 and became MP for Kincardineshire. He bought the barony of Congalton in the parish of Dirleton, Haddington (now East Lothian). Edinburgh High School
The Royal High School (RHS) of Edinburgh is a co-educational school administered by the City of Edinburgh Council. The school was founded in 1128 and is one of the oldest schools in Scotland. 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons
The 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons was a cavalry regiment in the British Army, first raised in 1689 as Sir Albert Cunningham's Regiment of Dragoons. One of the regiment's most notable battles was the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690. It became the 6th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Dragoons in 1751. The regiment also fought with distinction in the Charge of the Union Brigade at the Battle of Waterloo and again as part of the successful Charge of the Heavy Brigade against superior numbers at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. The First World War sounded the death knell for mounted cavalry as it became apparent that technology had moved forward with greater destructive power and made horsed cavalry redundant on the modern battlefield. Battle Of Minden
The Battle of Minden was a major engagement during the Seven Years' War, fought on 1 August 1759. An Anglo-German army under the overall command of Prussian Field Marshal Ferdinand of Brunswick defeated a French army commanded by Marshal of France, Marquis de Contades. Two years previously, the French had launched a successful invasion of Hanover and attempted to impose an unpopular treaty of peace upon the allied nations of Britain, Hanover and Prussia. After a Prussian victory at Rossbach, and under pressure from Frederick the Great and William Pitt, King George II disavowed the treaty. In 1758, the allies launched a counter-offensive against the French and Saxon forces and drove them back across the Rhine. After the allies failed to defeat the French before reinforcements swelled their retreating army, the French launched a fresh offensive, capturing the fortress of Minden on 10 July. Gullane
Gullane ( or ) is a town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian on the east coast of Scotland. There has been a church in the village since the ninth century. The ruins of the Old Church of St. Andrew built in the twelfth century can still be seen at the western entrance to the village; the church was abandoned after a series of sandstorms made it unusable, and Dirleton Parish Church took its place. Gullane Bents, the village's award-winning beach, is backed by large sand dunes that in recent years have become rather overgrown by invasive shrubs like sea-buckthorn. Gullane is part of the John Muir Way, a long-distance footpath along the coast between Musselburgh and Dunglass. Lord Adam Gordon (c. 1726 – 13 August 1801) was a Scottish career army officer, achieving the rank of general, and a younger son of Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon, and Lady Henrietta Mordaunt. Early life and education He entered the army as an ensign in the 2nd Dragoons in 1741, and attended Eton from 1742 to 1743. That year he was promoted to lieutenant, and in 1746 became a captain of the 18th Regiment of Foot. Seven Years' War Gordon was returned for Aberdeenshire in 1754, and was made lieutenant-colonel of the 3rd Foot Guards in 1756.
