Robert Henley (naval Officer)
Captain Robert Henley (5 January 1783 – 7 October 1828) was an officer in the United States Navy during the Quasi-War with France, the War of 1812, and the Second Barbary War. He was the brother of Captain John D. Henley, John Dandridge Henley, USN (1781–1835), who served during the First Barbary War and the War of 1812. Born in Williamsburg, Virginia and educated at the College of William and Mary, Robert Henley was the son of Leonard and Elizabeth Dandridge Henley and the nephew of Martha Washington, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. Henley was appointed a midshipman on 8 April 1799. Midshipman Henley then participated in the engagement on 2 February 1800 between USS Constellation (1797), ''Constellation'' and HMS Vengeance (1800), ''La Vengeance'' during the Quasi-War with France. Robert Henley, 1st Earl Of Northington
Robert Henley, 1st Earl of Northington, PC (c. 1708 – 14 January 1772), was the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. He was a member of the Whig Party in the parliament and was known for his wit and writing. Family Born the second son of Anthony Henley, Robert Henley was from a wealthy family in Hampshire. His grandfather, Sir Robert Henley, had been Master of the Court of the King's Bench, essentially a defence counsel. Henley's father Anthony Henley was educated at Oxford and interested in literature. When he moved to London, he became the friend of the Earls of Dorset and Sunderland, as well as a friend of Swift, Pope, and Burnet. After becoming a married man, Anthony Henley had been the Member of Parliament for Andover in 1698. He died in August, 1711 and was succeeded in turn by his eldest son, Anthony and his second son, Robert. Robert Henley, 2nd Baron Henley
Robert Henley Henley, 2nd Baron Henley (3 September 1789 – 3 February 1841), was a British lawyer and member of parliament. Life Born Robert Henley Eden, he was the son of Morton Eden, 1st Baron Henley, and Lady Elizabeth Henley, youngest daughter of Lord Chancellor Robert Henley, 1st Earl of Northington (c. 1708 – 1772). He was educated at Eton College, and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1807, graduating B.A. 1811, and M.A. 1814. Henley served as a Master in Chancery from 1826 to 1840 and between 1826 and 1830 he also sat as member of parliament for Fowey. In 1830 he succeeded his father as second Baron Henley, but as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. Robert Henley, 2nd Earl Of Northington
Robert Henley, 2nd Earl of Northington (3 January 1747 – 5 July 1786), was a British politician. He was born the eldest son of Robert Henley, 1st Earl of Northington, and educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He succeeded his father to the earldom in 1772, inheriting The Grange, Northington. He was appointed a Teller of the Exchequer in 1763, a position he held until his death. He was also Clerk of the hanaper for life from 1771. He was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hampshire on 30 March 1768, and sat until succeeding as 2nd Earl of Northington on 14 January 1772, when he moved to the House of Lords. Robert Henley (cricketer)
Robert Henley (10 June 1851 – 21 March 1889) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of Cornish Henley, he was born at Sherborne in June 1851 and was educated there at Sherborne School. Henley was commissioned into the British Army when he purchased the rank of ensign into the King's Royal Rifle Corps in May 1870, with promotion to lieutenant following in November 1871. While garrisoned at Winchester, he played first-class cricket for Hampshire in 1875, making a single appearance against Kent at Winchester. He was absent hurt in Hampshire's first innings, but did bat in their second innings where he scored 14 runs before being dismissed by George Remnant. He also bowled three overs in the Kent first innings, without taking a wicket. In the King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was promoted to captain in October 1880, before being promoted to major in June 1885. Robert Henley (Birmingham Mayor)
Robert Harwell Henley was the first Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, from 1871 until 1872. Life Robert was born the son of attorney John Woodson Henley on January 20, 1843. He moved with his wife Amelia Peters to Elyton and founded the weekly newspaper ''Elyton Sun'', which later became the ''Birmingham Sun'', the city of Birmingham's first newspaper. He became the first mayor of Birmingham after the city's incorporation on 19 December 1871, appointed by Robert B. Lindsay, the Alabama Governor at the time. Andover was the name of a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England from 1295 to 1307, and again from 1586, then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918.
