Robert Fletcher (costume Designer)
Robert Fletcher (August 23, 1922 – April 5, 2021) was an American costume and set designer. He was best known for designing costumes for major ballet and opera companies in addition to films, television specials, and New York stage plays. Personal life Fletcher was born in August 1922 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His father was actor Leon Ames. As of 2018, Fletcher lived in Kansas City, Missouri with his husband, Broadway dancer Jack Kauflin. He died there in April 2021 at the age of 98. Kauflin predeceased him. Career After the semester in Iowa, Fletcher moved to New York City and worked as an actor, appearing in Ethel Barrymore's last show, ''Embezzled Heaven''. He lived in a cold-water flat with artist Ruth Russell. ''High Spirits'' is a musical theatre, musical with a book, lyrics, and music by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray, based on the play ''Blithe Spirit (play), Blithe Spirit'' by Noël Coward, about a man's problems caused by the spirit of his dead wife. Martin and Gray adhered closely to Coward's original text, although they expanded the Mediumship, medium's character to make it the star role. The playwright was delighted with their adaptation, then entitled ''Faster Than Sound'', and agreed to direct it himself. Productions Originally, Coward had mentally cast Keith Michell as Charles, Gwen Verdon as Elvira, Celeste Holm as Ruth, and Kay Thompson as Madame Arcati, with Bob Fosse as director. ''Little Me'' is a musical written by Neil Simon, with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh. The original 1962 Broadway production featured Sid Caesar in multiple roles with multiple stage accents, playing all of the heroine's husbands and lovers. One of the better-known songs from the musical is " I've Got Your Number". Background The musical ''Little Me'' is based on the novel by Patrick Dennis titled '' Little Me: The Intimate Memoirs of that Great Star of Stage, Screen and Television/Belle Poitrine'', an illustrated autobiography of an imaginary diva (published in 1961). The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Midtown Manhattan. The awards are given for Broadway productions and performances.
