Robert Fanshawe (4 January 1740 – 4 February 1823) was a British officer of the Royal Navy and a Member of Parliament. Family and early life Robert Fanshawe was born in British America on 4 January 1740, the second son of Rear-Admiral Charles Fanshawe and Elizabeth Rogers, daughter of Sir John Rogers, 2nd Baronet. Robert Fanshawe was a member of the Parsloes branch of the Fanshawe family, being a descendant of William Fanshawe, an M.P. that lived during the early 17th century. He joined the navy in 1753, serving as a midshipman aboard the 50-gun . He went to the East Indies during the Seven Years' War with the squadron commanded by Vice-Admiral Charles Watson. Fanshawe saw action at the capture of the fortress of Geriah, the recapture of Calcutta, and the Battle of Chandannagar in 1757. Sir John Rogers, 2nd Baronet
Sir John Rogers, 2nd Baronet (14 June 1676 – 21 January 1744) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1713 to 1722. Rogers was the only son of Sir John Rogers, 1st Baronet and his wife Mary Vincent, daughter of Spencer Vincent and was baptised at St Andrew's, Plymouth on 14 June 1676. His father was a merchant of Plymouth and had also been Member of Parliament for the town from 1698 to 1700. On 9 May 1698, Rogers married Mary Henley, daughter of Sir Robert Henley at St Giles in the Fields in London after which his father gave him the Blachford Estate at Cornwood, near Ivybridge. In 1710, he succeeded his father to the baronetcy. Rogers became Recorder of Plymouth in 1713 and was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Plymouth at the 1713 general election. The New York and New Jersey campaign in 1776 and the winter months of 1777 was a series of American Revolutionary War battles for control of the Port of New York and New Jersey, Port of New York and the state of New Jersey, fought between Kingdom of Great Britain, British forces under William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe, General Sir William Howe and the Continental Army under General George Washington. William Hotham, 1st Baron Hotham
Admiral William Hotham, 1st Baron Hotham (1736–1813) was an officer in the Royal Navy. He was the son of Sir Beaumont Hotham (died 1771), a lineal descendant of Sir John Hotham. Biography Hotham was educated at Westminster School and at the Royal Naval Academy, Portsmouth. He entered the navy in 1751, and spent most of his midshipman's time in American waters. Post-captain is an obsolete alternative form of the rank of Captain (Royal Navy), captain in the Royal Navy. Sloop Of War
In the 18th century and most of the 19th, a sloop-of-war in the Royal Navy was a warship with a single gun deck that carried up to eighteen guns. The rating system covered all vessels with 20 guns and above; thus, the term ''sloop-of-war'' encompassed all the unrated combat vessels, including the very small gun-brigs and cutters. Bomb Vessel
A bomb vessel, bomb ship, bomb ketch, or simply bomb was a type of wooden sailing naval ship. Its primary armament was not cannons ( long guns or carronades) – although bomb vessels carried a few cannons for self-defence – but mortars mounted forward near the bow and elevated to a high angle, and projecting their fire in a ballistic arc. Explosive shells (also called ''bombs'' at the time) or carcasses were employed rather than solid shot. Anne Antoine, Comte d’Aché (23 January 1701, Marbeuf – 11 February 1780) was a French naval officer who rose to the rank of vice admiral. He is best known for his service off the coast of India during the Seven Years' War, when he led the French fleet at the Battle of Cuddalore and Battle of Pondicherry. Admiral Sir George Pocock or Pococke, KB (6 March 1706 – 3 April 1792) was a British officer of the Royal Navy. Vice Admiral Charles Watson (1714 – 16 August 1757) was an officer of the Royal Navy, who served briefly as colonial governor of Newfoundland, and died in Calcutta, India.
