Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap
The Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race run from 1983 through 2013 at Hawthorne Race Course in Stickney/Cicero, Illinois. A former Grade 3 event, it was open to horses age three and older and contested on turf over a distance of one mile (8 furlongs). Inaugurated on October 9, 1983, the race is named in honor of Robert Francis Carey, founder of the American Brick Company and the Managing Director of Hawthorne from 1947 to his death in 1980. In 1985, 1994 and again in 2009, soft course conditions from heavy rains resulted in the race being transferred to the main dirt track. Hawthorne Race Course
Hawthorne Race Course is a racetrack for horse racing in Stickney/Cicero, Illinois, near Chicago. The oldest continually run family-owned racetrack in North America, in 2009 the Horseplayers Association of North America introduced a rating system for 65 Thoroughbred racetracks in North America. Of the top ten, Hawthorne was ranked No. 8. History and information In 1890, Edward Corrigan, a Chicago businessman and horseman who owned the 1890 Kentucky Derby winner, Riley (by Longfellow), bought of land in Cicero and started constructing a grandstand for a new racecourse. His track opened in 1891 with a five-race card including the featured Chicago Derby. In 1902, the grandstand burned to the ground, which moved all racing to the Harlem racetrack in Chicago. Raymond Frederick Sibille (born September 13, 1952, in Sunset, Louisiana) is a retired American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. In a career that spanned thirty-five years, he rode his first winner on June 29, 1969, at Evangeline Downs in Carencro, Louisiana. In 1973, he moved to compete at the Chicago-area tracks, where he won riding titles at Arlington Park, Hawthorne Race Course, and Sportsman's Park Racetrack. In 1981, he relocated to Southern California, where he won numerous top races. Kinsman Stable is the '' nom de course'' for the American Thoroughbred racing stable of George Steinbrenner, best known as the owner of the New York Yankees Major League Baseball team. A director and former president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association, Steinbrenner became involved with the sport in the early 1970s and owned the Kinsman Stud Farm in Ocala, Florida where his Thoroughbreds are stabled. His son Hank and daughter Jessica are both involved in the business. As of 2008, Kinsman Stable has bred and/or raced more than thirty-five stakes winners.
